George Erotokritos

Silks Gallery is honored to present the legendary Cypriot artist Erotokritos and his latest series of paintings entitled "Beyond Boundaries".

The name Erotokritos is highly recognized not only in Cyprus but also internationally. He is the artist who writes poetry through his paintings. He uses his brush like a writer uses a pen to create lyricism whilst employing his vivid and lively imagery that express his visions better than words would. The strongest attribute and element that distinguishes almost all his artworks is the striking and intensive indigo blue - a lavish and intriguing colour that immediately pulls the viewer into its own sphere.

The journey continues in a byzantine monastery or a luxurious byzantine church where the armies of angels keep guard of the thresholds to the divine worlds. A world that has been decoded and rendered into a breathtaking vision of representations and symbols marked in gold with its delicate and atmospheric figures. The magic carpet then leads us to our next stop - a souk, the Arabic bazaar that combines two atmospheres together: the vivid and loud life together with the quiet mysticism.

Giorgos Erotokritos was born in Lambousa, a village near Kerynia in 1948 A.D. He studied in Athens and in London. He has worked in Mount Athos focusing on byzantine painting and restoration. Since 1980 he lives in Limassol, Cyprus. He has held numerous solo exhibitions and has taken part in many group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad (Netherlands, France, U.S.A, Greece, Belgium). Some of Erotokritos' credits include: the well known ‘Faberge Jewelers’, who commissioned him to design a collection of Faberge eggs.

The opening of the exhibition: "Beyond Boundaries" by Erotokritos will take place on the 3rd April 2009 at 19:30 with a reception and cocktails. The exhibition will stay on until the 30th April 2009.
