Don't forget '74

Monday through Friday
From: Monday, July 20th, 2009
Until: Friday, September 11th, 2009

Lambrakis Team, a group of young people summoned and coordinated by the poet Stavros Lambrakis, present the exhibition titled “Don’t forget ’74”. The exhibition’s theme is an expression of a critical voice against social and ethical dereliction of the recent historical violence that took place in Cyprus that culminated in the Turkish invasion of 1974.

Lambrakis Team reacts to the decadent socio-political interpretations that undermine the events of 1974 and produce neo-Cypriots with a distorted memory. A kind of memory that implicitly legitimizes the current status quo and which excuses superficiality and materialistic trade-offs. The exhibition is also a reaction to indifference towards social inequality and racism, as well as to consumerism and its concurrent tendency for easy socio-political solutions.

The exhibition takes place at an old preserved house within the walled city of Nicosia. It is comprised of visual artworks, videoclip projections, installations and conceptual works.

The organizers invite everyone to visit the exhibition; to dedicate a small amount of time to see the artworks and also show their commitment to a better ethos that these artworks call for. To commemorate justice.

10th Paradise Jazz Festival at Pomos

We are proud to announce that the 10th Paradise Jazz Festival is going to be held at its usual scenic venue just before Pomos at the Paradise Place over an exciting and unforgettable three weekends from
Saturday 18th July to Saturday 1st of August July 2009.

The subject of this year’s festival is once again the musical culture of the island. Our aim is to create a musical platform for talented local musicians to present their work. That’s why we chose a fresh programme with new artists and groups, instead of a tribute of past years for our 10th anniversary celebration. Some faces we know from previous performances here at Paradise Place, but this year they are moving in different groups and flying in different directions.

On our journey to collect what is best, we ended up with far too many groups that we could squeeze into a weekend… So, this is where the idea of 3 weekends on the road came…..

A “Latin, Samba Jazz Night” with a familiar band "Trio Smiles" with their huge fan base to start on Sat. 18th (20:00) as pre-start gig, to open the “Jazz-times 09”. Their music travels beyond geographical barriers, and takes the people with them into their musical common language.

The following weekend 24th, 25th & 26th is the main part of the Festival, starting on Friday 24th (20:00), with the excellent new work of Savvas Houvartas and his seven member band, a project that is being recorded at the moment. During the concertwe are going to hear only original compositions (instrumentals and some with Greek lyrics. Mediteranian melodies and strong elements of improvizations from the mucisians, who, with their personal style complete the sound of their perfomance.

On Saturday we will have 2 bands. The one is a uniquely talented group called GoJam Group (19:00) from Greece that will appear for the first time in Cyprus. We, the organizers, checking their website on My Space fell in love with their music which fits perfectly with our location. A young pleasant group that alaways on their live performances they create a special atmosphere with their virtuoso technical play & the transmiting enthusiasm perfomance . The night starts perfect for things to follow.

The second band is the The Takoushis / Karapatakis Quartet (21:00), a fantastic line up with the some of the island’s best artists. The sophisticated and colorful compositions of Marios Takoushis together with his charismatic style of playing and his incredible ability to improvise, meet the music of Gabriel Karapatakis who with his sparse and unique expressivness, takes us to soundscapes with minimal but groovy bass lines.According to their latest performances and reviews, the four musicians leave their stigma on the island's jazz scene and are able to disclaim the fact that jazz is music for musicians only.

On Sunday 26th (18:00), we have Classical Jazz Afternoon. One of the most well known local musicians, Irinaeos Koullouras, is presenting a quartet of magnificent musicians who are visiting the island special for our festival and for sure this will be the highlight of this year music celebration. “The Meeting Point Jazz Quartet" will promise you an unforgetable late Sunday Afternoon. The two old friends, Ofer Ganor on guitar and Irenaeos Koullouras on acoustic bass, met back in 1994 in Boston and New York and since then they perform together in several occasions and places around the world along with several musicians of the jazz scene. This time they come together again to join forces with two other great musicians of their generation, Asaf Yuria (Youtube) on tenor saxophone and Doron Tivosh on drums. “The Meeting Point Jazz Quartet" will present compositions from the jazz repertoire along with some compositions of their own. Special guest on vocals Ioanna Troullidou.

Ending this musical celebration on Saturday 1st of August is the “European Trio and Jan Kus” (21:00) an also newcomer on our festival. The Trio which was created in 2008 are heavily influenced by Modern Jazz (Brad Mehldau, Wayne Shorter) and European Music (Keith Jarrett European Quartet), and so their approach comes from a fusion of these styles. For this concert the Trio becomes a Quartet with the addition of Slovenian saxophone player Jan Kus.

One of the big surprises of this year Festival is the dancing act, which takes place before the last gig. The Point to Performances (20:00) are researching contemporary forms of theater, which leads the odion to a real experience. The theme of the play is an observing look to the relation between couples today.

The tickets costs for Saturday 18th July €10, for Friday 24th July €12,
for Sutarday 25th July €20, for Sunday 26th July €15 and for Saturday 1st of August €15.

Cesaria Evora

Monday, July 27th, 2009

FluffyFish Productions is proud to announce the concert of the ‘Queen of Morna’ Cesaria Evora on Monday, 27th, 21:00 at the Larnaca Pattichion Municipal Amphitheatre. The concert will be held within the framework of the ‘Larnaca Festival’.

Cesaria Evora, born in 1941 in the port town of Mindelo on the Cape Verde island of Sao Vicente, is known as “The Barefoot Diva” because of her propensity to appear on stage in her bare feet in support of the disadvantaged women and children of her country.

Widely considered one of the finest and most popular female vocalists Cesaria Evora recreates the dreamy atmosphere of her native island with a luscious blend of intoxicating melodies and compelling lyrics. She is known as the queen of morna, the islands' sweet, soulful version of the blues, which fuses West African rhythms and European sensibilities with Caribbean and Brazilian influences. With a voice conveying power, vulnerability, and intense emotion, Cesaria, who is often compared to Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday, and Bessie Smith, has brought this unique expression of Creole culture to international audiences.

At the age of 16 she began singing in bars, and at 20 she was singing on the local radio. In 1988 Evora made her debut album "La Diva Aux Pieds Nus" in Lisbon. That year she performed to a small audience in Paris. It would be another three years before her concerts there would be all sold out. With "Miss Perfumado" in 1992 her career took off at speed. At the age of 50 The Legend was born. This was her springboard into the international world of music. "Miss Perfumado" sold more than 500,000 copies in France alone, and earned her 5 gold records. In all, Cesaria Evora has released 10 original albums, has been nominated for the Grammy seven times, won BBC, GRAMMY & UNESCO awards as the leading African Female Vocalist of all times, received one of the most prestigious musical awards of France "Victoire De La Musique", and she is also the WFP UN Ambassador against Hunger.

Meanwhile, the legend of the Barefoot Diva - the woman who rose from rags to riches with her haunting rendition of the Morna - lives on, delighting thousands of enthusiastic fans worldwide.

In Cyprus, Cesaria Evora will perform songs from her world famous repertoire, such as: Sodade (this piece was also recorded in Greece with Eleftheria Arvanitaki), Besame Mucho, Angola, Jardim Promedido, Tiempo Silencio, Linda Mimosa, along with songs from her latest Grammy award winning album Voz D’amor – and songs from the recently released album Rogmar. If history has anything to do with it we should expect a plethora of awards and why not maybe another Grammy nomination!

Audiences should expect nothing less than a magical evening, promising to take you away to the island atmosphere of Cape Verde which Cise is so renowned for creating. A once in a lifetime opportunity to listen to one of the worlds leading vocalist of all times!

The Horrifying state of pop superstar Michael Jackson in his final days!

The Autopsy results have been released! The harrowing leaked autopsy details show the singer was a virtual skeleton — barely eating and with only pills in his stomach at the time he died.

His hips, thighs and shoulders were riddled with needle wounds — believed to be the result of injections of narcotic painkillers, given three times a day for years.

A mass of surgery scars were thought to be the legacy of at least 13 cosmetic operations.

Experts found the distressing evidence of Jacko’s physical decline while investigating his startling death in Los Angeles last week. The examination showed the 5ft 10in star — once famed for his on-stage athleticism — had:

PLUNGED to a “severely emaciated” 8st 1oz. It is understood anorexic Jackson had been eating just one meagre meal a day.

Pathologists found his stomach empty aside from partially-dissolved pills he took before the painkiller injection which stopped his heart. Samples were sent for toxicology tests.

LOST virtually all his hair. The pop pin-up was wearing a wig when he died and pathologists said little more than “peach fuzz” covered his scalp.

A scarred section of skin above his left ear was entirely bald — apparently the result of a 1984 accident when his hair caught fire as he filmed an ad for Pepsi.

He suffered several broken ribs as frantic rescuers pumped his chest after he collapsed in cardiac arrest. Four injection sites were found above or near to Jacko’s heart.

All appeared to result from attempts to pump adrenaline directly into the organ in a failed bit to restart it.

Three of the injections had penetrated the heart wall — causing damage — but a fourth missed and hit one of the 50-year-old star’s ribs.

The autopsy also found unexplained BRUISING on Jackson’s knees and on the fronts of both shins. And there were CUTS on his back, indicating a recent fall.

The King of Pop’s once handsome face bore a network of plastic surgery scars, while the bridge to his nose had vanished and its right side had partially collapsed.

As inquiries into the tragedy last night focused on the star’s personal physician Dr Conrad Murray, a source close to the Jackson entourage said: “Michael’s family and fans will be horrified when they realise the appalling state he was in.

“He was skin and bone, his hair had fallen out and had been eating nothing but pills when he died. Injection marks all over his body and the disfigurement caused by years of plastic surgery show he’d been in terminal decline for years.

“His doctors and the hangers-on stood by as he self-destructed. Somebody is going to have to pay.” Cardiologist Dr Murray was thought to have given Jackson the final injection of painkiller Demerol.

He is facing serious questions about his resuscitation attempts, which began when he started CPR as Jacko lay unconscious on a bed. Basic first aid guidance says patients must be face-up on a hard surface before compressions.

Experts yesterday expressed amazement that a trained cardiologist could have made such an error, potentially wasting vital minutes.

Additional damage was believed to have been caused by oxygen masks and tubing inserted during resuscitation attempts. But in an ironic twist, the probe found Jacko was recovering well from skin cancer — with an op to shave cells from his chest a total success.

A second autopsy demanded by the Jackson family was carried out at a secret location on Saturday after the first ruled out foul play.
Family friend Rev Jesse Jackson said the family were deeply suspicious about what caused his death.

Dr Murray was hired just 11 days ago by AEG Live — the firm masterminding Jacko’s 50-date residency at London’s O2 Arena, which was due to start next month.
Sources claimed the family were preparing a multi-million-dollar lawsuit against the cardiologist.

Detectives were unable to find the doctor at Jackson’s home and his car was taken away for analysis as police sought him for questioning. He surfaced late on Friday and was quizzed over the weekend.

The Sun told on Saturday how Jacko had developed stage fright for the first time and was terrified of performing the comeback gigs.
Aides claimed the ailing star even believed he would be KILLED if he pulled out on health grounds. We also revealed he was taking a potentially toxic cocktail of drugs.
Sources last night said prescriptions for drugs for patients other than Jacko were found at his home. Those patients were due to be quizzed.

THE nanny who cared for Michael Jackson’s kids has claimed: “I had to pump his stomach out many times.”

Grace Rwaramba said she saved his life several times after he took too much medication.
She worked for Jackson for 12 years before being sacked two months ago.
His family begged her to return to the US from London to help comfort son Prince Michael Jnr, 12, daughter Paris, 11, and son Blanket, seven.

They are said to have cried for Grace, 42, since their dad’s death.

She added: “I’m really distraught for them. Michael hadn’t been eating and the kids have been so scared for him.

“The youngest’s been saying, ‘Why Daddy? God should have taken me, not him.
