Competition 2015: Tackle climate change with your sustainable business idea until 29th May!

You have a business idea about sustainability and you have what it takes to become an entrepreneur. In that case, ClimateLaunchpad could be your ticket to European and global success. Your cleantech idea can be about an all-out mind shift in urban mobility, a sustainable transition in the food chain or any other way to tackle climate change.

How it works
In 2015 the competition is open to participants based in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Check the submission deadline per country.

Small print
Let us challenge you, join the competition. But before you do, we just want to make sure that you:
have not yet started a business or you started it less than one year ago;
have no substantial revenue;
you have attracted less than € 200.000 in investment;
you have not yet sold products, solutions or prototypes on commercial terms.

So even if your idea is on the back of a napkin, you’re most welcome to join. All good? Enter your idea by filling out the application form. Our National Juries select the best proposals to join the National Competitions. If you’re in, these are the steps you’ll walk:

Step 1: Boot Camp
ClimateLaunchpad kicks off with a 2-day Boot Camp in your own country. Our trainers will teach you all you need to know about jumpstarting your business.

Step 2: Intensive coaching and National Finals
The Boot Camp is followed-up with a period of intensive coaching. You’ll perfect your pitch, value proposition and business model. After that, you’ll be ready to rock the National Final where you get to pitch in front of your National Jury. The Top-3 of each country enters the European Final in September in the Netherlands.

Step 3: European Final in the Netherlands
The Top-3 of all National Finals get a chance to pitch their idea in front of the review board of Climate-KIC Accelerator. If you impress them, you might gain access to Climate-KIC Accelerator, the 18-month real life business school where great ideas grow into great businesses.
The 8 teams selected in the European semi-finals to perform in the Grand Final, will get direct access into Climate-KIC Accelerator without having to pitch to a review board. Besides this, the overall winner of the European Final receives € 10,000, the runner up gets € 5,000 and the idea that comes in third place wins € 2,500.

The Thief. 19th May in Nicosia

A play by Dimitris Maniatis directed by Stamatis Kraounakis.

We don’t know who he is. The famous bandit Yagoulas? Davelis? One of the terrible Retzou brothers? Thomas Gantaras? The thief with the gladioli? Paleokostas the Uncatchable? A persona which encompasses all of the above and much more or nothing at all, or a lunatic raving about a life which he imagined went something like that?

In a place undefined in terms of time, the thief in the performance is not only an unlawful person – according to current social norms –, but also a contradictory polysemous human being with a peasanty staccato way of speaking, with passions and jealousy, hatred and love. A fiery character who tells his own story, his own version of History, an adversary of public order on whose head a bounty was issued because he dared to define his own set of rules.

In a delirious flash back the images of a life on the edge, in the wild and in the mountains, play out before us via the narration of this social thief. And somewhere amidst the fighting and the entrapments, the a capella chanting of brigandish songs, the tussles and the negotiations, the image of ladylove prevails. The woman he loved, who gave him courage by her very existence, though he never managed to tell her so. Until his final atonement.

Musical flavours of today and yesterday, 13th-15th May 2015

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra presents the programme “Musical Flavorus of today and yesterday” with soloist Virginie Bove (flute), under the music direction of conductor Lisa Xanthopuolou Constantin Papageorgio’s ballet music Illusoes is based on an imaginary scenario in which the composer creates illusive atmospheres. Mozart’s 1st flute concerto is full of brightness, melodic gracefulness and energy with plenty of virtuosic passages for the soloist. Poulenc’s only symphonic work, his Sinfonietta, was a commission from the BBC to celebrate the opening of the Third Programme. And indeed a celebratory work it is: plenty of dance rhythms, satirical moments and haunting melodies, clothed in classical folksiness, modality and lush harmonies.

C. PAPAGEORGIO: Ilusoes
W. A. MOZART: Flute concerto no.1 in G major, K. 313
F. POULENC: Sinfonietta

Inside, Outside & In Between the Buffer Zone. Exhibithion 24th April - 13th May

6x6 Centre for Photography proudly presents this photography exhibition by Barbara Laborde, in collaboration with Alliance Française de Limassol.

180km-long and 7-km-wide, barely 4m of space in some places: the buffer zone has different faces; it is sometimes a mountain, a single lane, a succession of lands, villages or ruins. You follow it for a while and then you lose track of it. You face it or simply guess its presence behind military watchtowers. You are stopped by its barbed wire or you enter it without noticing. Depending on who and from where one looks at it, the buffer zone repels, fascinates, disturbs, intimidates or is totally ignored. It remains an itchy scar, no longer bloody, but still an open wound. So present. So elusive.

The line, as it is known, is not really a line. Two ceasefire lines delimit the buffer zone, with a
different reality behind each of them and between them a territory where life continues. The UN troops are working there every day, Georgios and Osman cultivate their fields, Stelios visits the cemetery of his village, Elena opened a kindergarten while Mihalakis and his wife live there all year long! The buffer zone is 40-years-old, but only a few insiders really know it. And this for an obvious reason: without the permission and a serious UN escort, we are limited to get a glimpse of it and imagine it from outside.

Barbara Laborde is a French photojournalist based in Nicosia. She has been following the buffer zone for over a year, seeking to capture this territory and question its reality. The documentary work she presents, offers visitors a long journey within the buffer zone and along both its southern and northern sides, from west to east. A mosaic of stories and images, like so many opened windows on this hidden strip of territory, and some crucial 'keys' to better understand it.
