13th International Greek Drama
1-31 July
Now in its 13th year, the ethos of the International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama shows how ancient theatre is interpreted by modern companies from all over the world.
This year, throughout July, nine companies from six countries of Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean present well-known favourites such as ‘Medea’ and ‘Antigone’ alongside lesser-known but equally riveting productions like ‘Thebaid’ and ‘Alcestis’.
The performances take place at the Ancient Odeon of Paphos, the Curium Ancient Theatre in Limassol and the Makarios III Amphitheatre in Nicosia.
The festival is presented by the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute which was founded 32 years ago. The Centre’s contribution to the Cypriot theatre community is considerable. Through visits of international playwrights, directors and scenographers, the Cypriot theatre community had the opportunity to become acquainted with the global theatrical trends and to bring these developments to local audiences.

Michael Jackson
Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American recording artist, entertainer and businessman and apart from being known as the worldwide King of Rock n Roll he enjoyed exceptional popularity on the Island of Cyrpus.
Sadly Michael Jackson died on the 25 June and this tragic event captured the attention of the mass media and the general public across the Island of Cyprus. Clearly Michael Jackson has many fans and followers in Cyprus and will be sorely missed.

Lord of the Dance
July 7
Michael Flatley, creator and director of this award-winning international dance phenomenon, proved his vision that hearts and minds, united through music and dance, cross all traditional boundaries. His Lord of the Dance continues to shatter box office records all over the world, leaving audiences breathless and clamoring for more.
From the moment the lights go down to the last encore, audiences are spellbound by a masterfully orchestrated combination of precision dancing, state of the art lighting and pyrotechnics. The musical score leaves no soul untouched.
Based on Irish folklore, this classic tale of Good vs. Evil, expressed through the universal language of dance, has thrilled audiences worldwide and catapulted Irish dance to a new dimension and unprecedented worldwide acclaim.
As the story unfolds, the Little Spirit travels through time to help the Lord of the Dance protect his people from the challenge of Don Dorcha, the Dark Lord. As this evil dark power challenges the hero, the incredible adventure continues, drawing its audience into a mythical universe of love, danger, and desire.

Cats, the West End of London Musical comes to Larnaka!
To the delight of the local residents and tourists alike, the Larnaka Municipality has taken the pro-art and Entertainment move to host a West End Musical for a special performance in recent years, during peak summer. Amazingly, this involves transporting the entire cast in London to Larnaka. Last year the popular musical of Mary Popins graced the stage of Larnaka and this year the Larnaka Municipality presents one of the most famous musicals ever, Cats!
Cats is a musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot. It features the hit song classic, "Memory".
The musical first opened in the West End in 1981 and then on Broadway in 1982, in each case directed by Trevor Nunn and choreographed by Gillian Lynne. It has won numerous credits an awards, including both the Laurence Olivier Award and the Tony Award for Best Musical. The London production ran for 21 years and the Broadway alternative for eighteen years, in both cases setting historical long-run records. The star actresses of Elaine Paige and Betty Buckley are in particular associated with the musical.
Cats has been performed around the world in numerous productions and wastranslated into more than 20 languages. Interestingly, it was also made into a 1998 video, broadcasted on television.

Michalis Hatzigiannis

When he was 15, he participated in a song contest in Cyprus, "Afetiries" where he won the first prize. Afterwards, he also participated in the "Laiki Bank Song Contest" with the song 'I Diki Mou Istoria' written by Andreas Gerolemou and won the first prize. In 1995, he participated in the Cypriot National Final for the Eurovision Song Contest 1995 with two songs, namely "Filise Me" (written by Andreas Gerolemou) and "To Gramma" (written by Leonidas Malenis) where the former entry came in 3rd place and the latter entry landed in second place. That year Alex Panagi won the preselection with the song "Sti Fotia". Michalis started his career in Cyprus with three records that all went platinum: "Senario", "O Mihalis Hatzigiannis Traguda Doro Georgiadi" and "Epafi". He also participated in a musical production in Cyprus called "Pygmalion" in addition to also performing a number of concerts in major city tour in Cyprus titled "Mixalis Xatzigiannis, Andreas Gerolemou".
In May 1998 he represented Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest. He performed the song "Γένεσις" (Genesis), a composition of his own and took the 11th position.
Upon Michalis Hatzigiannis in Athens, Greece he collaborated with the composer Giorgos Hatzinasios and with poet and lyricist Michalis Bouboulis to create the CD single "Angigma Psychis" (Touch of soul) which was released in December 1998 by BMG Greece. The album contained songs to the ANT1 TV series bearing the same title, including the hit singles "Angigma Psychis" and "To Soma pou Zitas" (The body you seek). The album was certified platinum.
In 2003 he released the 3x platinum five song EP "Monos Mou" (By myself). The single "An Mou Tilefonouses" (If You'd Called) became a hit and the demand for airplay kept growing for months. The song remains one of the most popular Greek ballads of late. In the summer he toured Greece, performing sixty-three sold out shows.
He received three awards from the IFPI's annual Greek Arion Awards in 2003, followed by another four awards in 2004, including the award for Best Male Performer of the Year.
In April 2004 he released his third solo album, Akatallili Skini (Unsuitable scene), which increased his popularity in the Greek music scene. On April 30, 2004, he represented Cyprus at the official EU enlargement ceremony which took place in Warsaw to mark the accession of ten new countries into the European Union.
In the summer of 2004 he toured Greece and sang at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Athens. In winter he made about 100 appearances in Athens and Salonika with the hugely popular singer, Paschalis Terzis.

The Rialto Theatre in co-operation with the Embassy of the Czech Republic to Cyprus and the organisation Jeunesses Musicales Cyprus presents a musical encounter between Czech and Cypriot musicians in the framework of the festivities marking the Czech Presidency of the European Union.

the first jazz orchestra in Cyprus, the Cyprus Big Band, will meet to give a joint concert and an opportunity to the audience to get a taste of the new trends in European jazz. The original compositions of Milan Svoboda, Maestro of the Prague Big Band, which represent a long tradition of jazz in Central Europe, will be performed in arrangements for a quartet and a little Big Band.
The Cyprus Big Band is the first jazz orchestra in Cyprus. It brings together prominent Cypriot musicians, graduates of renowned European and American music schools. The orchestra is a typical “Little Big Band” and comprises alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, two trumpets, trombone, piano, bass and drums. It so happens that Benigno is looking after another woman in a coma, Alicia, a young ballet student; he talks to her, reads to her, holds photographs in front of her closed eyes. Opera
Bravissimo
The performance “Bravissimo!” is dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Novaya Opera Theatre. It is a selection of classical operatic masterpieces, representing different opera music forms: arias, duets, trios, quartets, quintets, choruses and orchestral numbers.
The protagonist of the performance is the Theatre. The scene of Part 1, which consists of Russian classical operatic numbers, is set in the Hermitage Garden in the early 20th century.
In Part 2 we leave the would-be theatrical quarters of Part 1 and “enter” the Theatre proper to listen to foreign operatic hits. This performance is an expression of our gratitude and admiration for all opera composers, to whom the Novaya Opera Theatre never stops saying “Bravissimo!”
