Heads or Tails

From: Wednesday, October 7th, 2009
Until: Saturday, October 10th, 2009

A play by Katja Hensel commissioned by THEATER AN DER PARKAUE, Berlin and THOC. Part of the European Theatre Convention (ETC).

Context of the play
The media enjoy news coverage about violent incidents, especially if they are committed by teenagers. Almost every day we learn that violence among young people is increasing. The most recent research report of the German Ministry of Internal Affairs speaks a different language: the researchers observe a declining or at least consistent tendency. In Cyprus, on the other hand, there seems to be an increase in the number of violent incidents reported amongst young people and the matter is in the centre of public dialogue. In order to find out more about the young people's perspective as well as about their different experiences and attitudes, the German playwright Katja Hensel has started an intensive research phase with young people in Berlin and Nicosia in order to draw on their views and opinions: What does violence mean to them? What have they already experienced? Do they enjoy living in their city and do they like going to their school? What role does hatred of foreigners play? Texts and improvised scenes that have been developed by the pupils during this research period build up the basis for Katja Hensel's play.

Synopsis
Christopher, 15, brutally beat up a Turkish boy. After returning from a detention centre he wants to change everything. He breaks away from his former friends and makes an effort at school. He claims he went to the seaside for medical reasons so that nobody knows why he actually has to resit the class. Christopher turns into a enthusiastic advocate of the European Union. The peaceful, impartial and non-violent co-operation of cultures becomes his new ideal. But the new life does not set in: There are many construction works at his school. His parents never have time for him. His former friends make sure that he does not forget them. His new classmates sabotage him. Suddenly, the Other shows up and starts giving him a hard time. Constantly, he comments on what Christopher does and says, he exposes him as a liar and he bets that Christopher ends up in jail again shortly. The two start fighting, it is an exhausting fight pushing the boundaries. When Christopher thinks that he has finally silenced the Other, his life goes to pieces completely. An explosion happens at school with far-reaching consequences.

Serge Devant

Serge’s early electronic career is starting to be marked with the achievements of a seasoned veteran and now with his new single lighting up dance floors and a rock-solid album looming… exciting is an understatement.

So far Serge has already graced the prestigious Top 100 Poll, been a resident of Crobar in New York, had sponsorship deals with Coca‐Cola and Armani, been involved with the Beijing 2008 Olympics… and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

Having played pretty much all of the world’s most prestigious venues Serge’s passion for performing is stronger than ever. His sound is hard to pigeon hole, by why would we want to… it’s high octane, very addictive and gets the kind of response you’d expect from someone with such talent.

His beautiful blends of breath-taking vocal pieces and tight production skills have seen him release a slew of top-notch tracks. Like so many other top DJ’s, it takes one big track to shoot to new heights, for Serge it was his cover of The Beloved’s ‘Sweet Harmony’. It received worldwide acclaim from everyone that matters, from Radio 1, to DJ’s at the highest level and his next single has all the hallmarks of doing the same.

"Addicted" is already receiving airplay from some of the worlds biggest radio stations like Radio 1, Kiss FM and Sirius, and has been tagged as "Record of the week" in the U.K – the sky is seemingly is reachable and then beyond, and all this the perfect lead-up to the bomb that is about to drop…

Alex Levac

From: Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Until: Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Tel Aviv celebrates its 100th birthday and on this occasion the Embassy of Israel in Cyprus organizes a photographic exhibition of the popular alternative photographer Alex Levac.

Alex Levac's photographs nearly always tell a story or at least aim at a story. Many of Alex Levac's photographs are like that: episodes of waiting and about waiting, of situations that are in-between, of the suspension of swift time. This waiting, the photographs seem to say, is not banal or empty. On the contrary: The waiting is itself the real event, the highly charged occurrence, the story that is often not just one story but rather a number of stories that are rubbing up against one another and leaving the viewer with the vivid impression of the friction more than they impress him with a single, crystallized, orderly plot.

Oil Paintings and Digital Artwor

I was born in Cyprus and immigrated to London UK when I was 6 years old. My early memories of Cyprus often come to the fore when I am painting. I now live part time in Cyprus and part time in Cambridge UK.

I studied Art and Design foundation diploma in Cambridge and then studied Fine Art Painting BA at Central St Martins in London and graduated 1996.

Since graduating I have exhibited in mixed shows in London, Cambridge, Ely, Halstead, Whittlesford and Cyprus. I have had solo painting exhibitions at Pelican Gallery, Clown Gallery, ArtSpace Gallery and have also had solo exhibitions at Open Studios for the past 10 years. Work sold has gone to Brazil, Belgium, Australia, China, Cyprus and in and around Cambridge.

The work in this Exhibition has been inspired by my love for Cyprus and the knowledge of its turbulent history. Colour combination, surface texture and light are elements that have been very important to me in painting and with the digital work.

Sometimes the work takes on a celebration of nature and comes directly through feelings. There are times when the work is more conceptual with some prior idea of the direction I would like the work to take.

The source of the work comes from places I have seen but it is not only about a sense of place but also about the passion I feel for nature. With its ephemeral beauty comes the reminder of our own vulnerability and a metaphor for our own inner space.

I splash, dribble, scumble and brush on layers of paint until I get a subconscious connection with the work and finally bringing it to a conclusion that is satisfying to me and hopefully can inspire others to connect with it.

The Digital work is also worked in layers using a combination of painting and photography. The work on Ancestry was for an exhibition at the Zoology Museum in Cambridge in 2008.

The exhibition will be opened by the Deputy Mayor of Larnaca Mr. Alexis Michaelides on Wednesday 11 September 2009 at 7.30 p.m.

Impressions of Cyprus - Gilbert Wiper

From: Saturday, September 5th, 2009
Until: Monday, October 5th, 2009

Gilbert Wiper depicts his love for Cyprus in an almost tangible way. The rich use of colorful oil paint interlaced with striking light effects gives his work the quality and appeal of the great Impressionist masters of the past.

Born in 1936, Gilbert Wiper worked as a Civil Engineer until becoming a full-time painter. After training with Kenneth Webb, he was elected to the Irish School of Landscape Artists and more recently to the United Society of Artists.

Gilbert began exhibiting in major London exhibitions in 1969. By now his work can be found in the collection of a European Commissioner, local authorities, brewers and in many private collections in Belgium, Switzerland, USA, Argentina and Cyprus. His paintings have steadily increased in value.

Gilbert Wiper ran a highly successful school for adult painters. However, the weather did not suit his style of painting, so he moved to the sunshine of Cyprus.

Gilbert Wiper now lives in Polemi. He works mainly in oil. His Impressionist style reflects his love of color and texture, and is influenced by the work of Maurice de Vlaminck and Vincent van Gogh.

Ban Ki Moon visit - will he or won't he?

There are rumors throughout Cyprus that a Ban Ki Moon (UN General Secretary) visit to Cyprus is imminent. However, there is no credible source to quote or reliable information to confirm such an event.

The logic of such a visit would likely be to boost the Peace process, which of late has lost momentum somewhat.

A Government spokesman clearly stated that the General Secretary would be welcome to meet the President of the Cyprus Republic whenever he wanted to. It should also be noted that the two have already met on 2 separate occasions previously.

Our next wine tasting will be beginning of October, and for November we are planning a special event in Limassol. As most of our members are in Paphos there will be an option for transport to Limassol. We will let you have the details as soon as we can.

I would like to inform all our members of two events which will take place this month. Both are fundraisers for very worthy causes and even though they do not have anything to do with the wine club it would be great if we could support them.

Vakia Stavrou "Into the Seas of Songs, a Journey"

The concert is a part of a musical voyage among various countries and cultures with a common characteristic: the sea. Songs from Brazil, Argentina, Cyprus, Italy, Greece and Portugal, an inspired repertoire, carefully selected from the performer, already presented in concerts in the city of Paris at Theatre de L' Isle St Louis, Theatre de la Vieille Grille and in London, at the Hellenic Centre.

The distinguished greek cypriot singer and songrwriter Vakia Stavrou, accompanied by her trio of excellent cypriot musicians, is guiding the public through a musical voyage, into the songs of Carlos Gardel, Astor Piazzola, Nino Rota , Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vamvakaris, Papaionnou, and so many others, to the beautiful sounds of Fados, Tarantellas, Tangos, Rebetiko, Bossa Nova and performs with brio or great sensitivity the genuine character of the songs mentioned.

Joy and nostalgia, happiness or sadness, love or hate, desillusion or not, but certainly deep and true feelings.. this is the main idea of this repertoire. In two words, a unique blend of different sounds and songs, that time has never touched, still shining through their wonderful and strong melodies, still up to date with their meaningfull lyrics.

Vakia Stavrou
, a singer and songwriter, after finishing her studies at the Jazz Studio in Belgium and later on at the Conservatoire of Prague in Czech Republic, where she studied Voice on Jazz and Contemporary repertoires, continuing on the same time her studies on Classical Guitar, she was offeres a contract from SONY BMG Records in Athens and she made her debut in discography by performing two songs on an album called " Helidonia tis Vrohis" ( Sparrows of the Rain) of the composer Giorgos Andreou and the poet Dionisis Karatzas. Vakia was a new voice among the other participants of the album: Marios Frangoulis, Tania Tsanaklidou, Eleni Tsaligopoulou and Dimitris Mbassis.

Following was her first personal EP, with the title " O.H. E" which included also the hit "Sozinha" written by Vakia herself in Portuguese. Meanwhile, she collaborated in various concerts in Greece, Cyprus and France as a soloist, with Fivos Delivorias, Marios Frangoulis and Deborah Myers, Vasilis Lekkas and Francis Lalanne.

Recently, Vakia Stavrou presented a number of concerts of an international repertoire at the Theatre de L'Isle St Louis and the Theatre de La Vieille Grille in Paris as well as at the Hellenic Centre in London, warmly received by both audiences. The Greek culture magazine "Athinorama" described her as "a breath taking voice that moves the audiences at once" and also the greek newspaper "Kathimerini" wrote "a performer with great vocal abilities, with a world music's sound".

Party Animals

Over the past five years, Cypriot choreographer Lia Haraki has created with her company Pelma a comprehensive body of work that moved away from its more formal, movement based origins into new territories of contemporary dance theatre, embracing storytelling and popular culture. All throughout the body of work a distinctive personal signature is shown- a generous love for the human, a preference for the physical as means of expression and a genuine sense of humor and self-relativism.

The central underlying theme of her work seems to be the quest to understand our human identity. A journey which often resembles a balancing act between the comic and the tragic.

Party Animals is the second of a series of new works in which Lia Haraki explores how our personal identity is unconsciously influenced by and built on shared conventional images and references. In Pretendance, a duet with Alexander Michael, they gave a humorous, self-relativising view on their career as professional dancers. In Party Animals they open up their creative dialogue, inviting Ariana Marcoulides as a third performer and the audience to assist at a party. - Guy Cools, April 2007

In the piece the human being is seen as a social animal, using body language to communicate. I am looking at how gesture, movement and vocal sound acquire meaning and symbolic value through human expression and at the same time provide interesting choreographic material

As Desmond Morris mentions on human body language:
‘Our body language...has remained untouched by the advance of civilization. To watch it, is to witness a fascinating human ballet of gestures and expressions, of postures and movements, an every day ballet in which the performers need no training.' - Lia Haraki

Lia Haraki

Lia Haraki (born Limassol, Cyprus) works as a choreographer and performer with her company .pelma.lia haraki. She Studied at the Laban Centre (BA dance theatre) City University in London and continued working as a performer with various companies in Athens for five years. Her work has been presented in European fetivals (Aerowaves Festival London, Tanec Praha Festival, Julidans Aerodance 2004/2005, Kleines Haus Dresden, Euro-scene Leipzig 2004/2005, Kalamata International festival, other) and has won awards (Cyprus Dance platform 2003/2005). She has a close collaboration with dramaturge Guy Cools and visual artist Polys Peslikas. She was the first scholarship recipient from Cyprus for the Dance Web Programme of the Impuls Tanz Festival in Vienna in 2003. In 2005 she initiated the creation of Dance House Lemesos, for which she is the president of the board and a founding member, representing Cyprus in the European networks Dance Web-Europe and Aerowaves. Lia is teaching technique and choreography at the University of Nicosia in the BA Dance course. In 2007 she has been voted by the public as ‘creator of the year' in the Madame Figaro Awards.

Alexander Michael

Alexander Michael began his formal training at the School of Toronto Dance Theatre, where he studied. While in Toronto, he had an opportunity to perform with some of the leading choreographers in the area, including David Earl, Tricia Beatty, Danny Grossman, and Newton Moraes. In 1997, he moved to New York on a full Coca Cola scholarship to the distinguished Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance. He was the principal of the Graham Ensemble, and has performed with Pascal Rioult, Megatron, and Maher Benham. An injury led him away from the dance world and towards a successful international modeling career. Upon returning to Cyprus, Alexander began dancing again. He had a fruitful collaboration with Lia Haraki appearing in many of her productions, as well as Alexandra Waierstall, Christodoulos Panayiotou, Chorotheatro Omada Pente, Karolina Constantinou and others. His choreographic career began with "Piazzolla Meditteraneo," a series of duets performed with live music. This led to a collaboration with Jeunesses Musicales, under which he has shown his work. He soon followed with his first entry at the 2005 Contemporary Dance Platform and has been a permanent part of the Cypriot dance scene in the past four years as a dancer and choreographer.

Ariana Markoulides

Ariana graduated from Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance in 2004 with a degree in Dance Performance. She returned to Cyprus in August 2004 and up to August 2007 took part in a number of performances in Cyprus and abroad with local dance companies such as .pelma.lia haraki, Solipsism, Interact, Chorotheatro Omada Pente, Diastasi, and a production with the Cyprus State Theatre. She was assistant choreographer to Antonio Collandrea in December 2006 for the dance company DanceCyprus. During this period she attended workshops with Chris Harring, Lin Snelling and Guy Cools, Machi Lindhal, Kurt Koegel.

Ariana is currently in the second year of studies for a Masters in Contemporary Dance Education in Frankfurt am Main. In March 2009 she participated for the first time as a creator of the piece, "Fellow People" with Katja Mustonen, in the Cyprus Dance Platform.

Polys Peslikas

Polys Peslikas (born 1973) is a visual artist who works with painting and photography. Since 1996 he presents his work in Cyprus and abroad. He is part of the creative team of the magazine Isterografo (Fileleftheros). He has also collaborated with various Cypriot choreographers as an art director.

Aida Gomez - "Carmen"

Carlos Saura's muse and soloist of the Ballet Nacional de Espana, Aida Gomez, and the Compania De Danza Espanola present, under the direction of Emilio Sagi, this amazing production of flamenco music and dance.

After a triumphant premier at the International Festival in Jerez, Spain, the musical, ‘Carmen', has been a huge success in Japan and Taiwan and continues to thrill audiences in Europe, Mexico and the US.

Carlos Saura's muse, Aida Gomez, plays the leading role in this amazing production. A dancer and choreographer, Aida Gomez has for many years, worked as the Artistic Director of Spain's National Ballet (Ballet Nacional de Espana).

The musical's Director, Emilio Sagi, is also the Artistic Director of Teatr Zarzuela and Teatro Teal of Madrid.

The most important objective of the production is to offer audiences a different interpretation of this already well-known story. Unique body language, movement, faces that mirror the soul, the music, choreography, costumes and special lighting effects, all combine in a very special way, to transport the viewers to a different era, keeping their interest alive and focused from the beginning to end.

The charismatic Aida Gomez interprets the role of Carmen perfectly, combining her flamenco dancing abilities with her knowledge of classical dance.

The story portrays a sensual and provocative woman in love. Filled with tension and passion, she is determined to do whatever it takes, "because", as Aida Gomez says, "there is no life without love".

Aida Gomez
Aida was born in Madrid, Spain, where she began her dance studies. She joined the National Ballet Company under the auspices of Antonio El Ballarin and performed many leading roles.

In 1989 she played Dona Ines in Miguel Narros, DonJuan, with choreography by Jose Antonio. The production was also presented in Moscow and St.Petersburg. Joaquim Cortes included her as featured artist on his 1996 European and US tour which visited the Royal Albert Hall in London and Radio City in New York among other top venues. She also collaborated with Maurice Bejart's company as a teacher and at the Rudra School.

In 1997 she inaugurated Madrid's Teatro Real with her production of Falla's El Samrero de Tres Picos, for which she was awarded the Max Scenic Art Prize for best female dancer. After forming her own company, the Spanish Ministry of Culture selected her as Artistic Director and she has become the youngest ever Director at the Spanish National Ballet. That year she performed her choreography of Vicente Amino's ‘Poela' and was invited to tour with the Andalusian Dance Company.

In 2000 she presented new works, among which ‘Carmen' by Jose Antonio. In 2001 she had mounted her own production company while rehearsing with her own troupe, for the debut of Salome directed by Carlos Soura. The project also gave rise to a film which won the Best Artistic Contribution prize of Montreal's International Film Festival. She is currently combining Master Classes at the Malaga and Cordoba conservatories with her company's tours and rehearsals for the premiere of her next work ‘Carmen' to be directed by Emilio Sagi.

F. Poulenc: "La Voix Humaine" (One-act Opera for one character, Libretto by Jean Cocteau)

D. Milhaud: Le boeuf sur la toit

Programme

Darius Milhaud is especially recognized for his striking, yet diverse output, which encompasses a variety of genres and styles. He is also known for his involvement in Les Six and his experimentation with polytonality and jazz. During the First World War, Milhaud served as an attaché at the French delegation in Rio de Janeiro. After the war, Milhaud returned to Paris, and still inspired by the Latin American music, he composed Le boeuf sur le toit (The Bull on the Roof), after a popular Brazilian song. As the composer confessed, "I couldn't help but assembling popular melodies, tangos, sambas and fado and transcribing them with a rondo-like theme that would recur between each successive pair". Milhaud subtitled the work, "Cinéma-Symphonie", as he believed it would be used by Charlie Chaplin in one of his films. Instead, it was used by Jean Cocteau in an absurd stage production with acrobats, and clowns from the Médrano Circus.

A. Roussel : Le marchand de sable qui passe

Even though Albert Roussel is not as famous as his contemporaries, Debussy or Ravel, he was quite prolific in his output, which combined both traditional and progressive elements. Reflecting Roussel's early style, Marchand de sable qui passe (The Sandman) Op. 13, was composed in 1908, two years after the composer's First Symphony and shortly after Roussel's marriage to Blanche Preisach. Arranged for the uncustomary instrumentation of string quartet, harp, flute, clarinet and horn, the work included incidental music from a tale by George Jean-Aubry. Unlike Roussel's large-scale works, the four-movement Op. 13 is wonderful in its textural simplicity and strong contrapuntal elements. A work of unsophisticated beauty and lyricism, the work also reveals the influence of Debussy's L'après midi d'un faun, as well as D' Indy's use of thematic recurrence as a means of uniting all the movements.

F. Poulenc: La Voix Humaine

Synopsis:

A young woman (simply referred to as Elle) answers the phone and begins a conversation with her lover of five years. He has abandoned her and is to marry another woman the following day. This is the last time they will speak to each other. During the conversation we learn that the woman has tried to commit suicide. The phone service in Paris being notoriously poor during that era, they are interrupted several times during the agonizing conversation. She veers from hysteria to calm running through every emotion. Fear, incoherence, suffering, lies fill the conversation, but the essential truths are never spoken... finally the receiver drops lifelessly to the ground and the connection is broken. She wraps the flex around her neck and goes to bed whispering words of love into the earpiece.

Overview:

"This ‘lyrique tragedy in one act', as the composer himself termed it, brings together a number of elements that are by nature anti-theatrical. Yet we are indeed dealing with an opera here. This forty-minute ‘drama of the ego' à la française depicts a character living through her drama of desperation in a situation produced by modern life, since there is no letter, no real encounter, but a virtual confrontation through the medium of the telephone, which has become an explosive device, the means both of connecting and of splitting up with the loved one, tenuous thread destined to be broken. The orchestra constitutes a tapestry of sound whose role is to convey the emotional climate and to increase dramatic density while at the same time creating unifying elements by playing on recurrent motifs. The entire musical structure is organised around a series of dramatic ‘phases' (the lie, the poisoning, etc.)"

Dulce Pontes - "Moments"

The world renowned singer Dulce Pontes will give two performances in Cyprus within the framework of the Kypria Festival.

Over the years DULCE PONTES has evolved into a renowned star of World Music, but more than anyone in this genre, Dulce is a diva – like a Lusitanian Callas. Her awe-inspiring voice is unmistakable and her versatile appeal is universal.

Dulce was born in 1969 in Montijo, in the vicinity of Lisbon. A young Dulce was introduced to the Portuguese Fado tradition by her uncle Carlos Pontes, Fado singer and a lover of bullfights. At the age of seven she began studying piano at the National Conservatory of Music in Lisbon, and it was here that her curiosity for music was aroused, and she acquired an insatiable instinct to research music which would eventually lead her to the multifaceted international career she possesses today.

Experimenting with her vocal qualities, Dulce made her professional debut as a singer after entering a competition in her hometown at the age of 18. She soon became an actress in Portuguese television and theater and in 1991 she won the national song festival with her song ‘Lusitana Paixão’ (‘Lusitanian Passion’). A year later her first record came out, Lusitana. In 1993, with her record Lagrimas (Tears), Dulce set out on her own course. Although she was considered by many as a potential successor to Amália Rodrigues, the internationally admired Portuguese Fado singer who died in 1999, Fado was just one of the elements that she was interested in. Today, the breadth of Dulce’s twenty-year career attests to her innate and enterprising search for new directions to express herself musically.

Dulce burst onto the World Music scene with the song ‘Canção do Mar’ – a kind of folk aria, rich with vast and dramatic minor chords that served as a backdrop to the sweeping power of her supremely emotional voice. Included on the album, Lágrimas, which became one of the best-selling records of all time in Portugal, this song appeared on the soundtrack of the 1996 Hollywood film Primal Fear, and is to this day Dulce’s instantly recognizable and world-known trademark song.

Considered the most adventurous of all Portuguese singers involved in Fado's current renaissance, Dulce is regarded as the one who defines its survival by respectfully stretching its boundaries. A musician, songwriter and singer, her work blends traditional Fado with contemporary styles and eagerly searches out new forms of musical expression. Dulce constructed her own identity by expanding the concept, rediscovering many long forgotten popular tunes, introducing new instruments and arrangements, and finding use for many allegedly obsolete musical instruments.

With her global success, Dulce became a citizen of the world. Spain, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Italy, the United States, Japan, Brazil, Dulce was everywhere, singing in a strange language on the stage, and achieving the miracle of proving that great music is a universal language. Her inimitable voice cannot be categorized within any style that limits her; it knows no national boundaries that can stop her. Her voice and singing are her very own style and, for that reason it is a style that is unique and unmistakable.

Through her career, Dulce Pontes released several records of Fado and Portuguese folk music, but expanded beyond the boundaries of Portuguese music. Her artistic explorations know no geographical or cultural borders. Her work is inspired and influenced not only by Iberian musical tradition, but also Arabic, African, Brazilian and Bulgarian. She sings mostly in her native Portuguese, but also in Spanish, Galician, Mirandese, Italian, English and Greek.

Invitations from international music stars for collaborations and her participation in concerts and recordings came of her versatility and fame. She has performed with Italian singer Andrea Bocelli, the Spanish tenor José Carreras, the Brazilians Simone, Cesaria Evora from Cape-Verde, the Brazilian Caetano Veloso, the Spanish bagpipe player Carlos Nuñez, and The Chieftains from Ireland. She has performed with George Dalaras, collaborated with Stefanos Korkolis, and the Greek singer Eleftheria Arvanitaki for whom she composed a song for her album Broadcast. Dulce’s 2003 album Focus is the fruit of collaboration with Italian film composer Ennio Morricone, on which she vocally interpreted his famous compositions, as well as some works that he created especially for her.

As a performer - singer and dancer - Dulce is dramatic and expressive - on stage she plays the piano, dons ankle bells, singing phrases and executing dance moves that evoke all at once, Celtic, flamenco, Arabic, Gypsy, and Indian music - a total theatrical performance. Dulce’s career has seen her perform countless international tours, singing on all the stages of the world and in 2007 Dulce Pontes became the first Portuguese artist on the mythic Carnegie Hall’s stage in New York City where more than 2500 people paid her tribute with a standing ovation.

In 2008 this versatile and prolific artist celebrated the twenty-year anniversary of her career and her latest work has been in the Top 20 of the World Music Charts Europe for the last two consecutive months. Her new album Momentos, which should be released by the end of the year will contain previously unreleased songs and new versions of songs recorded through her career in many locations around the world. The tour "Momentos" will start in the spring of 2009.
