Exhibition: Mosaic etc, April 22nd - May 2nd in Nicosia

On Wednesday 22nd April at 7.30pm an exhibition of mosaics and other art will be opened at Tehnis Dromena Gallery, 53 Arch. Kyprianou Str in Strovolos-Nicosia.

Christos Cassianos was born in Nicosia in September 1948. He had his primary and secondary education in Cyprus and subsequently studied Food Technology in the UK where he lived and worked in the food and drink industry up to his return to Cyprus in 2001.

He painted watercolours for a number of years and after his return to Cyprus he decided to try a different medium. He studied the art of mosaic and has been working in this form of art since early 2004, always looking for new ideas.

In this exhibition Christos other than mosaic is also showing new work where he combines driftwood collected on the shores of Larnaca and Limassol with mosaic, clay and other materials.

Christos has participated in several group exhibitions throughout Cyprus and has also shown his work in solo exhibitions.

Cyprus Theatre Organisation presents: Which Body? 29th April in Nicosia

The Cyprus Theatre Organisation supports the activities of Accept LGBT Cyprus, and presents on the 29th of April an additional performance of the play "Which Body?" by Korina Kontaxaki (director) and Eleni Kosma.

The play is based on the real notes of a person with «gender dysphoria», who wishes to remain anonymous. Ioanna hides in the safety of her bedroom, away from anyone who might ask her name. As she grows, her trapped, inner self, Paris (presented as a separate character in the play), begins to express himself through the drawings on her bedroom wall. As the play unravels, Paris becomes more and more demanding, fighting for the right to speak, to exist. In all of this struggle and isolation, the only ray of light is her best friend, Katie, with whom Paris is in love. When Katie finally manages to see Ioanna’s true self, she falls in love with him too… but their love hits a dead end, because in order for Paris to exist and be with her… he must lose Ioanna. Something which is impossible for her mother to accept, as she adamantly refuses to see anyone but the girl she gave birth to.

Direction: Korina Kontaxaki, Set-Costume design: Giorgos Chiotis
Music: Angeliki Kouali, Lighting Design: Stavros Evlambiou
Assistant to the Director: Eleni Cosma

Cast: Marina Mandri (Ioanna), Nayia Anastasiadou (Keti), Elena Papadopoulou (Mother), Giorgos Anayiotos (Paris)

Cyprus Film Days 2015, 17th-26th April in Nicosia

The Festival consists of two main programmes: the international competitive section known as Glocal Images and the non-competitive section known as Viewfinder which comprises films that have been screened and awarded at major festivals over the past year. For the first time this year, the Festival introduces a National Competition Section, exclusively showcasing Cypriot productions. Special tributes, parallel screenings, master classes, workshops and musical events, complete the program of the official International Film Festival of Cyprus.

This is the first time that Cyprus Film Days incorporates a special section with films for young audiences. The Cyprus Film Days for Children and Youth, which is co-organised in collaboration with the International Children’s Film Festival of Cyprus, includes screenings of international awarded films for young audiences as well as short films produced by children in Cyprus and Greece.

A three-member Artistic Committee is responsible for the selection of films within the programme, while a Jury made up of internationally recognised professionals, awards films accordingly. The awards are as follows: Best Film, Special Jury Award and Best Director. For the first time this year, a new award is introduced for the National Competition Section, which will be given to the Best National Film. Temples in the shape of the sky - 18th-26th April

1010Hall the Art House in Nicosia is hosting a unique photo exhibition by the well-known revolutionary photographer from Greece, Mr. Loukas Hapsis; 32 pieces of art of ancient Greek temples under a full starlit sky that has not been montaged or Photoshoped. This remarkable art collection consists of 14 ancient Greek monuments which took 14 months to complete; 1 month for each monument. Each piece of art hides over 200 pictures in order to experience ancient Greek temples like you have never seen them before. In addition to Mr. Hapsis’ work you will have the opportunity to see a documentary film named “Voice Of The Past”.

Opening on the 18th of April at 20:00-23:00, followed the exhibition will be open to the public until the 26th of April from 18:00 to 22:00.

The opening will be performed by the Mayor of Nicosia Mr. Constantinos Yiorkadjis and followed by opera performance and wine & cheese reception.

Unique, appreciated and remembered
Every year, hundreds of thousands of people all over the world visit Greece to see the ancient Greek monuments. A different way to experience the beauty of Greece is through the captured magical images of the well-known Greek Photographer Loukas Hapsis. His art expresses the visual appeal of each monument with the unique background of the Greek starlit sky that not even the naked eye can conceive.

Loukas Hapsis has used unique techniques with a common device, the camera, to capture scenery with backgrounds that has never been seen before. His pictures have no filters or montage and hence they look as if they came out from a fantasy. Each picture consisted of a burst of 200 photos in order to capture the movement of the stars. A photo was taken every 30 seconds, with the use of either a small lens or a wireless flash. By leaving the shutter of the camera open he managed to light up every detail we see in his work. All this work was done in pure darkness.

The Greek photographer with 20 years of experience in astrophotography and landscape photography has used both techniques and has created the exclusivity that can be seen in his artwork. His work was viewed at exhibitions in Greece and is being viewed through websites and magazines all over Europe.

14 months, one month for each monument, that is how long it took for his collection to be completed. For every piece of art the trick was starting at a new phase of the moon to take advantage of the darkness. Even though Loukas Hapsis would camp out of each monument for a few days and each picture would need almost 5 hours to be completed the most difficult part for him was to gain overnight access to the monument as well as total darkness from all the lights shining on the monuments. Due to Loukas unusual dream and free mind we have the privilege to view ancient Greek monuments like we will never see them before.

Lellos Art Point Presents: "The Art Of Functionality - An Interdisciplinary Design Showcase."

Lellos Art Point Presents: "The Art Of Functionality - An Interdisciplinary Design Showcase."

Featuring: Demosthenis Michael, Flora Mavrommati, Ioanna Kanari Papadopoulou, Julia Astreou, Kleanthis Michael and Marios Charalambous.

‘The Art of Functionality: An Interdisciplinary Design Showcase.’ is an exhibition that will reveal the work of six Cyprus-based designer-makers, for the first time, at Lellos Art Point. The showcase is aiming to ‘marry’ the various fields of design in an orderly manner - to create conversations amongst the disciplines and, of course, the designers themselves, that way facilitating inspiration, debate, and possible collaboration. The featured designers take innovative approaches to materials and techniques, taking into consideration not only aesthetics, but also ergonomics during their making. By adopting that approach, they contemplate on the idea of design as the art of functionality, threading creativity into our everyday routines. The assorted sectors include: textile design, jewellery design, furniture design, headpiece/garment design and graphic design.

Demosthenis M. is a designer not afraid of being bold and experimental with his work. Using unconventional materials such as mesh wire and silicon glue, he creates pieces that are on the borderline of art and design. His avant-garde, sculptural headpieces are elegant with an unmissable gothic twist.

While examining Flora Mavrommati’s jewellery pieces, one feels like looking through a botanist’s stack of specimens: an array of delicately pressed flowers and leaves sustained within their plastic pockets. What otherwise would have been assimilated in nature or discarded by human indifference, the artist collects meticulously like artefacts, species under extinction from the planet and from our memory. Just like in nature, all pieces are individually unique.

Through her graphic work, Ioanna Kanari Papadopoulou finds a way to share her own perception of her surroundings and the world, interpreting the environment around her by technologically manipulating images of it including words, phrases and poems that inspire her.

The traditional Cypriot craft of weaving (loom) is revived by Julia Astreou; the designer is using this technique to create unique contemporary designs, amongst them wall hangings, pillows, and even lampshades. By utilising unorthodox materials such as cane, raw wool, sisal, copper wire and plexiglass, Julia gives her fabrics a contemporary twist with intriguing patterns, textures and transparencies.

Kleanthis Michael crosses the border from mere hand craftsmanship to sumptuous design, taking the art of ‘macramé’ to the next level by creating refined one-off pieces. Every semi-precious gem used, has a special connection to the body part that the piece of jewellery is designed for; for instance, the featured seven pieces are directed to the seven human body Chakra Points.

Marios Charalambous’s polished, state-of-the-art furniture is based on a simple idea of (laser)cutting, layering and/or assembling. The designer has a strong attitude towards a high level of quality, originality, practicality and aesthetics, creating pieces tailored to each user’s individual needs.

> Opening - 17/04/2015
> Time - 19:30m
> Open Until - 27/04/2015

"Let’s Do It Cyprus" - 26th April

‘Let’s Do It Cyprus’ is part of the worldwide campaign, ‘Let’s Do it World’, which shall be taking place again this year on April 26.

The innovative campaign which encourages countries to clean up the waste that is dumped in the countryside causing environmental pollution will not only join communities together but hopefully in a long term will help “To keep Cyprus clean forever”.

The aim of the campaign is to spread public awareness on issues related to the protection, preservation and sustainable management of the countryside and seas along with cleaning the litter living amongst us.

Stavriana Nathanail, volunteer coordinator told The Cyprus Weekly: “Not only does the campaign want to clean Cyprus of waste but it also wants to raise awareness of recycling and environment protection for the long term.”

She added that: “With education ‘Let’s Do it Cyprus’, hopes that in the next few years we will no longer have to conduct such major clean ups as Cyprus will be litter free for good.”

‘Let’s Do it World,’ was first started in Estonia, a small northern European country, in 2008 when 50 000 people gathered to clean up the entire country in just five hours.

The campaign was such a great success that other countries took suit and followed to rid pollution in their countries.

The first participation of Cyprus in this global movement was on September 29, 2012, where some 4,000 volunteers cleaned up over 150 points in the countryside. Encouragingly during the campaigns of 2012 and 2014 some 14,000 volunteers took part.

Local Municipalities, the public, volunteer organisations and members of the government are all being urged to join in cleaning up the rubbish, hoping to dispose of the litter in just one day.

Last year a record 10 000 volunteers participated. ‘Let’s Do It Cyprus’ wants to break this record this year.

Unfortunately Cyprus does not only have an issue with fly tipping but in turn is shockingly top of the list in Europe for waste production, with every resident producing 2 pounds of rubbish a day.

“Cyprus is first in the position on the per capita production of waste in the EU” said Ioanna Panayiotou, the Environment Commissioner.

The organisation is hoping to rake in more volunteers into cleaning up Cyprus so it’s known as a clean and environmentally sound country not just for residents but for tourists as well so that it has a good reputation to be proud of.

Tricoolore presenting Oregano Infused, 25th April in Limassol

World Jazz group Tricoolore presents its debut album “Oregano Infused” with a mini tour in Cyprus, Greece and the UK.

Explosive grooves meet nostalgic melodies that carry the flavour of tradition. Folk dance patterns combine with the African soul of New Orleans. A blending of musics of the world that creates a riot of colours and shades.

Tricoolore’s music balances between the global sound of jazz and the maqams of the East, combining elements from different music styles to create a unique soundscape, where all sounds Greek in the end. Using special rhythmic forms and a strong element of improvisation and drawing inspiration from their Greek musical background, Angelos Doukas on piano & keys, Vasilis Vasiliou on drums & percussion and Nikos Doukas on electric bass & loops break away from music stereotypes and follow their personal musical paths to take over the stage.

As a natural consequence of performances at important local festivals such as Aglanjazz, 1st Windcraft Music Fest, 1st Cyprus Jazz & World Music Showcase – Rialto Theater and a series of successful appearances in Greece, Tricoolore will release their debut album “Oregano Infused” on 13 April 2015. Beton & Hunger, 15th-17th April in Limassol

BETON7 and Peris Michailidis in collaboration with the theatrical space Synergeio in Limassol present the theatrical plays "Beton" of Thomas Bernhard and "Hunger" of Knut Hamsun on the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th of April 2015.

April 15-16: Beton (Concrete), Thomas Bernhard

A brilliant and haunting tale of procrastination, failure, and despair, Concrete is a perfect example of why Thomas Bernhard is remembered as “one of the masters of contemporary European fiction”

Instead of the book he’s meant to write, Rudolph, a Viennese musicologist, produces this dark and grotesquely funny account of small woes writ large, of profound horrors detailed and rehearsed to the point of distraction. We learn of Rudolph’s sister, whose help he invites, then reviles as malevolent meddling; his ‘really marvelous’ house, which he hates; the suspicious illness he carefully nurses; his ten-year-long attempt to write the perfect opening sentence; and, finally, his escape to the island of Majorca, which turns out to be the site of someone else’s very real horror story.

April 17-18: Hunger, Knut Hamsun

Hunger (Norwegian: Sult) is a novel by the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun published in 1890. Parts of it had been published anonymously in the Danish magazine Ny Jord in 1888. The novel has been hailed as the literary opening of the 20th century and an outstanding example of modern, psychology-driven literature. Hunger portrays the irrationality of the human mind in an intriguing and sometimes humorous manner.

Let that Saturday music vibe take you... April 18th at Ammos Beach Bar

Ammos Beach Bar at Makenzy Beach in Larnaca has a list of DJ events for the summer (as far as we can tell so far) that may make our high temperatures seem even more unbearable as our dancing feet just won’t be able to resist those red-hot vibes.

Although it is still technically not summer yet – and for anyone living on the island, it is still not considered summer weather by a long shot – the beach bar has already presented us with a few names which have given us the beats to start off the dancing season, and Saturday’s DJ plans to add to that list of beats.
This time Larnaca will be jumping to the rhythm of local DJ Dimitris Dimitriou or, as he is known by his stage name, DJ Double S.

Growing up in Nicosia, Dimitriou was passionate about music from a young age. But he only really got a handle on what it was like to be a DJ in 2008 when he had his first public appearance.

Now with a developed skill for mixing things up, the DJ has managed to gain a number of gigs in well-known clubs all over the island, and especially in the capital where his sounds feel most at home.

So if you are looking for someone to help you forget all about your troubles, and somewhere to lose yourself, then let Dimitriou’s loving hands take you to a place where even you won’t remember your own name.

A Feast of Colours exhibition by Achilleas Christou in Larnaca in April

"A Feast of Colours" is the title of the new exhibition to be presented by Achilleas Christou at Kypriaki Gonia Gallery from 2 - 18 April 2015. The inauguration will be performed by sculptor Kikis Patsalos on Thursday, 2 April 2015, at 7:30 p.m.

Achilleas was born in Paris and studied art and photography. He also attended a School of Art and followed courses in the art of steel and metal constructions. He has had six solo exhibitions in Nicosia, Paphos and Larnaca and has taken part in numerous group exhibitions. His work is characterised by freshness and harmony and coordination of movement and shapes within explosions of bright colours.

He says: “My inspiration usually comes from the positive emotions that are influenced by the four seasons of the year. Nature’s impressive transformation around us changes emotions and becomes form. As spring comes and with the prospect of sunny mornings on the lazy beaches of our country, a feast of colours gives rise to this exhibition.

“I use a modern acrylic material with a soft texture that dries quickly, so I am able to work continuous hours without delay.”

Andreas Hadjithomas, among other things, has this to say:“Achilleas, in a plain style, with simple expressive means, manages to capture the interest immediately and to surprise with the boldness of colours. He succeeds in combining this boldness with sensitivity but also with the aesthetic identification of the image. He has succeeded in presenting a balanced form and content that results in a dynamic conclusion. He is an artist who moves within the meaning of a clear, colourful form and its operational extension in a world seeking his identity."

Anemona Theater presents: Good morning ... Who are you???

Anemona Theater presents the comedy "Good morning ... Who are you???" based on the play "Perfect Wedding" of Robin Hawdon, adapted by Christos Grigoriades and directed by Giannis Savvides.

A bridegroom wakes on his wedding morning in his own bridal suite, with his bride-to-be about to arrive any moment, and finds a strange girl in bed beside him. What’s more an extremely attractive girl whom, in the depths of his post stag-night hangover, he can’t remotely remember even having been introduced to. Worse - during the ensuing panic to get the stranger dressed and out of the way, the bride arrives, the girl is trapped in the bathroom, the best man pretends the hidden girl is his girl friend, his real girl friend has to be kept ignorant of the fact, and the hotel chamber maid gets mistaken for everybody’s girl friend! By the time the bride’s parents and half the hotel staff get in on the act, the chaos reaches nuclear proportions! It is that rare combination - a riotous comedy and a touching love story at the same time.

The Gaze - Theatre Performance on 17th April in Nicosia

‘The Gaze’ is a theatre performance based on the methodology of devised theatre. Through this method a new theatre text was created.

The text is based on the traditional opposition between truth and lies. However, the play is driven to an area where truth and lies haven’t got clear boundaries and depend upon each other.

In this play, whatever seems as a lie confesses and reveals the truth. And whatever seems as most truthful, turns up to share an element of the imaginary.
