Aigaia End of Year Show 2014

Description

From the 11th until the 22nd June, the whole of the space at Aigaia school of art & design will be filled with art at the end of year show 2014.

Students studying art & design in the Tertiary level courses of the school will be presenting their final year projects. At the exhibition will also be presented work by all the students of the school studying at the examination preparation of the GCSE and A' Level courses, the adult, photography, printmaking, fashion groups etc.

The exhibition will be opened by the Mayor of Nicosia Mr. Constantinos Yiorkadjis on Wednesday the 11th June 2014 at 8.00pm. The exhibition will also be prefaced by Dr. Eleni Meli, Chief Education Officer, at the Department of Higher and Tertiary Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
At the opening night there will be various live events happening, a fashion show of the students' work and live action performances maintaining the tradition of the end of the year shows at Aigaia School of Art and Design as being part of the most interesting art & design events in Nicosia every year in June.

This year's final show holds a special identity as it marks the end of the first stage of the project «Contemporary meeting with Tradition» that started at the beginning of this academic year and is engaged with Cypriot Tradition, inspiration from it and then designing and making of contemporary art. The project was also given to the students of secondary education with collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture, as part of the art competition for this academic year. Their work was presented in Fanamgusta gate last month.

The subject matter for the research is «Cypriot Tradition». In times where there is an urgency for turning inwards, this is approached as a matter of the survival of our cultural heritage and also a matter of developing it into contemporary art & design and giving it such an identity to be proud of. Aigaia's students are approaching it through contemporary issues and concepts and present their own solutions covering all the main areas of art & design.

Through painting, sculpture, installation, photography, fashion, jewellery, accessories, objects, illustration, graphic arts, animation the students are proposing solutions that aim to contribute to the creation of a unique body of work by the end of 2015, for which Aigaia school of art & design is working towards completing, presenting and publishing.

The result for which the students have worked towards and are presenting in the end of year show, is not concerned with the decorative copy of the Cypriot tradition into contemporary objects but the in depth study of it and as a result the inspiration for the production of a contemporary art, design and theoretical result that contributes to the general effort in Cyprus to exit from he economic crisis, to the founding of the general respect of the Cypriot products and to the creation of a special contemporary culture building on the rich Greek culture of Cyprus.

The exhibition's visiting hours will be Monday - Saturday 10:00am - 1:00pm & 4:00pm - 8:00pm and Sunday 4:00pm - 8:00pm. During the exhibition Open Days will be taking place, so individuals interested can be informed on the tertiary education programmes offered and get a tour around the exhibition and the school's premises.

Something... sorrow Exhibition by Michalis Onisiforou

Cyprus : Something... sorrowCollage/painting exhibition
by Michalis Onisiforou @“Halara” coffee shop,
7th – 25th March 2014
In the end, the big questions are, what are we looking for and where are we going to find it? Do we even know what is it that we are looking for, or whatever will be will be? And what the hell happened with human relationships? Love has turned into exploitation, life became a constant carnival, and there seems to be no ending to this dangerous slope…
The current exhibition is preoccupied with this harsh reality, with the things that we carefully tend to hide under the carpet, and that’s simply because art is art and it has nothing to do with interior design and the decoration of one’s living room.
something sorrow
once the fairytale is missing and, all of a sudden, we become reality’s lovers seeking the fleeting carcass of gusto as our screams rise to the horizon of the being to go face to face with the inconceivable absence-it is indeed a great distance to cover; allegory is-while knowing that it is impossible
to reach the improbable end!

Collages - Andreas Aspromallis

15th -16th March
Is Not Gallery
11 Odysseos Street
NicosiaHaving studied Textile Design & Fine Arts at the Fashion Institute of Technology and later on at Parsons School of Design, Andreas Aspromallis always found himself fascinated by artistic people and the creativity of students and artists that existed in every corner of New York. People were visiting museums and galleries on a daily basis and so did he, making him anxious to start creating his own style of work.
Andreas finds inspirational artists that use their feelings in their work and admires as he says "Artists that create work by a single movement and not by putting hours of work and tones of paint". Examples of such inspirational artists, he continues, are Marcel Duchump, Hannah Hock, Piet Mondrian, Hanks Arp, Man Ray and John McLaughlin. The artist's work is influenced greatly by modernism and minimalism as well as by renaissance artists and the 19th Century.

"I see my art work as expressions that cannot be said by words but only through shapes and colours. I want people to feel emotions rather than see an image."
