Cyprus Symphony Orchestra presents the musical tale of of Peter and the Wolf in February

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra will bring to life Sergei Prokofiev’s (1891-1953) much loved musical tale Peter and the wolf narrated by Cypriot actor Petros Georgadjis and conducted by Alkis Baltas, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the CySO. Three family concerts will be given: one in Larnaka on the 6 February at the Municipal Theatre at 17.00 and two in Nicosia on the 7 February at Strovolos Municipal Theatre at 10:00 and 11:30am. The orchestra will also present the same programme in four morning educational concerts in Nicosia and Paphos, to be attended by selected primary schools and kindergartens.

The idea for “a musical tale for children” seems to have been suggested to the great Russian composer by the visits with his two sons to performances at the Musical Theatre for Children in Moscow. Each of the characters in Prokofiev’s tale is represented by a different musical instrument or instrumental group. Prokofiev himself wrote the text of the story: Peter enjoys the beauty of nature in the company of a duck, a cat and a bird, until a wolf appears... Come along to the CySO’s performances and let the musical instruments tell the story in their own unique and subtle way. After the musical story, the Orchestra holds a musical surprise for its young friends entitled The Magic Remote-Control.

In collaboration with the Department of Primary Education, Ministry of Education and Culture and the Cyprus Association of Private Preschool Education (CAPPE).

Chamber Music Concerts with musicians of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra for 2 days on the 24th & 25th of January!!

Τhe Chamber Music Concert series with musicians of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra organized for the past five years in Nicosia with great success, is extended as from 2015 to include other cities as well.

The first programme this year will be given in Nicosia and Limassol by a Trio with clarinet, viola and piano made up of CySO musicians Dusko Zarkovic (clarinet), Krzysztof Wrobel (viola) and guest pianist Elena Mitella-Violari. The ensemble will interpret Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Trio for clarinet, viola and piano in E-flat major, K. 498 followed and beautifully balanced by Max Bruch’s Eight pieces for clarinet, viola and piano, op. 83.

Mozart was the first to combine these specific instruments in a trio resulting in a work which flows with inspiration and beauty of melody and form. The special tim-bres of the clarinet and the viola give the music an espe-cially inti-mate and gen-tle char-ac-ter. Bruch’s magnificent composition is in essence a set of character pieces abounding with strong emotions: gloom, rhapsodic exaltation, restlessness and agitation, ardour and introverted lyricism.

Hamlet the Show- Globe to Globe Hamlet, July 2014

Description
The Hamlet Globe to Globe tour opened at Shakespeare’s Globe on 23 April 2014, the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. The Globe’s most ambitious tour yet, the two-year tour of Hamlet will visit every single country on earth. Sixteen extraordinary men and women will travel by boat, train, jeep, tall ship, bus and aeroplane across the seven continents, performing in a huge range of unique and atmospheric venues – from village squares to national theatres, from palaces to beaches.

Shakespeare’s Globe will bring its Globe to Globe Hamlet tour to the Αncient Τheatre of Kourion in Cyprus on 5 July 2014 at 8:30pm. Kourion was a city that endured from antiquity until the early Middle Ages and Hamlet will be performed in Kourion’s Greco-Roman theatre, against the stunning backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea for one performance only!

ABOUT THE SHOW
‘A production that prizes efficiency, clarity, accessibility and above all energy’
New York Times

Learning of his father’s death, Prince Hamlet comes home to find his uncle married to his mother and installed on the Danish throne. At night, the ghost of the old king demands that Hamlet avenge his ‘foul and most unnatural murder’. Encompassing political intrigue and sexual obsession, philosophical reflection and violent action, Hamlet is Shakespeare’s ‘poem unlimited’, a colossus in the story of the English language and the fullest expression of his genius.

The production is a young, fresh version of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy of deferred revenge that teases out its latent streak of gallows humour and celebrates the exuberance and invention of its language. Just twelve actors will perform over two dozen parts on a stripped-down wooden stage in a comparatively brisk two hours and forty minutes. It is the same Globe On Tour production that toured the UK, Europe and the United States in 2011 and 2012, when the New York Times called it “a production that prizes efficiency, clarity, accessibility and above all energy” and the Daily Telegraph praised its “young, unjaded and open-hearted” portrayal of the Danish prince.

'A wonderfully engrossing production' ****
The Independent
‘Good things often come in small packages, and so it is with Dominic Dromgoole’s speedy, pared-down Hamlet.’
The Guardian, 2011

‘A slick and engaging production cleverly tuned to outdoor touring locations.’
Financial Times, 2011

Cyprus entry fails at the Eurovision Song Contest

The Cyprus entry in the Eurovision Song Contest which was hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan before an international TV audience of 100 million last Saturday night, came in a disappointing 16th. All in all Ivi Adamou achieved 65 points with "La La Love".

The winning song (featured in the Video above) of the annual competition involving 42 countries came from a 28-year-old called "Loreen" from Sweden with the song "Euphoria".  She delighted both viewers and judges alike by dancing barefoot as she sang. Could this be the next best thing since the Swedish pop group "Abba", who became famous after winning the contest in 1974 with "Waterloo"?

The occasion was sadly marred in controversy, as opposition groups used the Eurovision spotlight to demand democracy and the resignation of the government. Activists in Baku also claim that some buildings within the centre of town were torn down to make way for the Eurovision arena with residents forcibly evicted without proper compensation. The event was supposed to promote Azerbaijan as a destination for tourism and business, however the opposite impact was generated.

Russia came in second and Serbia third in what was the 57th year of the contest!

"Esmeralda'' in Cyprus

Esmeralda

The Kremlin Ballet Theatre from Russia is presenting the passionate love story of "Esmeralda''.
"Esmeralda'' is based on the famous novel "Notre Dame de Paris" by Victor Hugo about the tragic love story of the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda, and her life within a world of hatred, love and justice.
The most famous ballet version of the story was choreographed by Marius Petipa, but Kremlin's art director Adrei Petrov has given the famous scenes a modern touch.
Each character holds an importance in the overall production, and instead of having a group of dancers performing the corps de ballet, they also offer a story of their own. The dances are distinctive depending on each character, but they all have a certain connection and add intensity to the whole work.
The ballet follows the storyline of the original novel.' Esmeralda is a young and beautiful gypsy who touches the heart of many men, including the hunchback bell ringer Quasimodo, his adopted father Claude Frollo and Phoebus, the captain of the King's archers.
Things get complicated as the three men get entangled in a complicated emotional attachment with the gypsy girl, and Esmeralda slowly falls in love with Phoebus, who already has a fiance, Fleur de Lys.
Knowing her affection toward Phoebus, Frollo steals her dagger and frames Esmeralda as a suspect for an attempted murder of the captain, and the gypsy is then sentenced to death by hanging.
Quasimodo struggles to save her and takes her to the cathedral for sanctuary, but the angry Frollo brings her back for execution, where she finally meets her fate. The heartbroken Quasimodo pushes his stepfather from the church for killing the love of his life, and he too dies next to Esmeralda's grave.
The Kremlin Ballet was born in 1990 on the initiative of its founder and present artistic director, Andrei Petrov, and thanks to his energy, persistence and undoubted organizational abilities. He knew this huge stage well – he had danced on it as a Bolshoi Ballet soloist since 1965, when he joined the country’s first ballet company after graduating from the Moscow Academy of Choreography (the former Moscow Ballet School). At that time, the Kremlin Palace was the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre of Russia’s second stage and its productions were shown here on a regular basis. Later on, when the Bolshoi stopped using the Kremlin Palace, Petrov had the idea of creating an independent company, based on this theatre. The idea won the active support of Russian ballet people. The outstanding dancers Ekaterina Maximova and Vladimir Vasiliev began to collaborate with the new Company, Vasiliev transferring to the Kremlin stage his ballet Macbeth (music by Kyril Molchanov), premièred at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1980. And so the young Kremlin Ballet Company opened with Macbeth.

 My Fair Lady
The Premiere Group Cultural Society will present the famous musical, MY FAIR LADY, as its 10th major musical production on February 27th and 28th at the Nicosia Pallas Municipal Theatre. The show, featuring a full cast and orchestra, follows on from the group's successful and popular musicals over the years, including

The Sound of Music, Annie, Oliver!, The King & I and Esther at Curium.

The musical is in English and runs for approximately two and a half hours including an intermission. Performances will be at 3:30pm and 8:00pm on both February 27th and 28th. Tickets for adults cost €20 on the ground floor/stalls and front balcony, and €15 for the rear balcony section. Children’s tickets cost €15 for all seating sections.

Advanced group booking (minimum 25 tickets) and ticket sales will commence on February 8th in Limassol, whereas the box office at the Nicosia Pallas Municipal Theatre will open on February 22nd (4pm-7pm daily). A bus service is being organized from Limassol to the Nicosia theatre and back. The round trip will cost €5 and the deadline for booking seats is February 19th.
