Naked Boys Singing

Robert Schrock’s musical comedy "Naked Boys Singing!" celebrates the splendors of male nudity. The Greek version of the off-Broadway hit is directed by Giorgos Valaris and Stelios Papadopoulos, and features Sofia Moutidou, Manos Pintzis, Philippos Constantine and others.

The Greek version of the show, adjusted accordingly to present today's' Greek male perspective, takes the show to another level! It deals with issues such as unemployment, family pressure and society expectations, relationships, the maternal connection, love life, career, loneliness, alienation, as well as provocative - and sometimes taboo - subjects, such as masturbation, muscle worship, or even the fear of getting undressed in the locker rooms, always installed however with a great sense of humor!

Accompanied by live music and video projections, seven impressive talented young men, sing, act and dance for you on stage, revealing their naked truth, thus achieving a very sensual - and at the same time artistic - sensation!

Flora Mavrommati - Dualities

From: Friday, December 4th, 2009
Until: Friday, December 18th, 2009

Dualities such as female/male, carnal/mental, whole/fragmented, conscious/unconscious are used to explore Human- Earth Consciousness and body’s reflection in relation to its invisible association with Greek-Cypriot culture and nature. The themes communicated in the Union of Dualities are chaos and order, symmetry, the state in the womb, rebirth and cycle in nature.

The ideological development is visually delivered by a sequence of colorful archetypal motifs. The choice of colors is intuitive. Free flowing automatic gestural forms, organic shapes and controlled geometrical structures suggest the movement and harmonic relations of things that are the invisible truths analogous to the visible world. Repetitions and infiniteness may represent psychedelic visual experience while in the process of self awareness.

Flora Mavrommati (1977) has exhibited in Australia and Cyprus since 2007 and has graduated from Sydney College of Arts, University of Sydney with Distinction.

Opening on Friday 4th of December 2009, 8.00pm.

Piano needn't be lonely

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

It's fun playing the piano with friends!

The respected pianist Nadia Lasserson, only daughter of the unforgettable piano teacher and founder of the European Piano Teachers Association (ΕΡΤΑ), has, for the past thirty years, been watching her students grow in self confidence and musical maturity by playing chamber music in the company of their friends.

“It is a remarkable experience, encouraging the making of new friendships, stimulating rhythmic precision and the skills required for sight reading,” she characteristically affirms.

At the seminar taking place on Sunday 29 November 2009, from 9 a.m to 1 p.m, at the concert hall of Mousio Theasis, a newly founded cultural centre in Larnaca, Ms Lasserson will present an educational DVD, produced by her, containing 27 performances with many different instrumental combinations. They all include the piano and cover all learning levels, from beginner to advanced. Ms Lasserson has collected an enormous quantity of material regarding the specific repertoire which will gladly share with the teachers participating.

The session will end with some “hands – on” multipiano repertoire for various combinations of 6, 8, 12 and 16 hands on 2 pianos.

An out-of-the-ordinary seminar aiming to manifest how much more fun piano teaching can be.

Cost of participation to the seminar, 25 euro. For more information please call Mouseio Theasis tel. 99400752 and 99624752.

Carl Palmer

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

The legend of the international rock scene comes to Cyprus. One of the three prominent musicians of the famous Emerson Lake and Palmer, a group that sold over 35,000.000 discs, Carl Palmer never ceased to play leading part in contemporary rock music making recordings and touring throughout the world, being for years the best drummer ever.

Carl Palmer is a drummer's drummer. A consummate professional, a brilliant technician and a dynamic showman, he has thrilled listeners and audiences alike for nearly four decades with some of music's most memorable bands including Atomic Rooster, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, Asia and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Along the way his dazzling speed and mastery of the drums, combined with his infectious stage personality, have secured for him a respected place in history as one of Rock and Roll's greatest drummers.

Carl Frederick Kendall Palmer was born in Birmingham, England, on March 20th, 1950. From the beginning it was clear that music was in the stars for the young Carl Palmer. His grandfather played the drums, his grandmother was a symphony violinist, his mother played an assortment of instruments, and his father sang, danced and played the guitar and drums as a semi-professional entertainer. In a musical family where even his brothers picked up the guitar and drums, Carl's fascination with music began early and classical violin studies followed.

Already a respected working drummer by 16, Palmer moved on to join Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds which also featured guitar great Albert Lee (later with Eric Clapton, Albert Lee & Hogan's Heroes, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Bill Wyman & the Rhythm Kings) and keyboardist Dave Greenslade (later in Colosseum). Pete Solley would eventually replace Greenslade in the band. Recalls Palmer, "yeah that was a blues band, a soul band with saxophones and everything. At the time, we were produced by none other than Mick Jagger." It was Jagger who had originally discovered Farlowe. With Palmer in the band the Thunderbirds enjoyed moderate success with the single "My Way of Giving" but it was the Rolling Stones cover "Out Of Time" which propelled Farlowe to the top of the UK charts.

It was with Atomic Rooster that Carl Palmer enjoyed his first real success as a founding member of a band. Media and fans alike immediately embraced Crane, Palmer and bassist/vocalist Nick Graham as the late 60's progressive rock scene was thriving. Their debut album, Atomic Rooster, hit number 49 in the U.K., and they enjoyed success with the singles "Tomorrow Night" and "Devil's Answers." All the while, fueled by his brilliant drum solos, Palmer's reputation grew as a drummer with phenomenal skill and dizzying speed.

In the spring of 1970, Carl Palmer received a phone call that changed his life forever. Keyboard virtuoso Keith Emerson, himself enjoying Top 10 U.K. success with The Nice, was forming a new band with King Crimson founder Greg Lake who had also just experienced real success with his band's legendary "In The Court Of The Crimson King". After trying out several drummers, including Mitch Mitchell, the two wanted Palmer to audition for a spot in the new trio but Palmer was uncertain if he wanted to leave the growing success of Atomic Rooster behind. Reluctantly, he agreed to meet and rehearse with the band and thank God he did.

The trio's first rehearsal mostly featured Nice and King Crimson standards, including
"Rondo" and "21st Century Schizoid Man", and all three musicians describe it as a "magical feeling" when they first played together. The session blew everyone away and Palmer was offered the job right there on the spot. Still not convinced however, he told Emerson and Lake that he would need to think it over. Returning the next day to another brilliant rehearsal, Carl Palmer accepted the invitation and joined the band.

In 1988 the chance came for Carl Palmer to team up once again with Keith Emerson in a new group with California-based singer/bassist Robert Berry. 3, as they were called, released their only album, To The Power Of Three, on Geffen records. Though the group received respectable FM airplay and followed with a successful club tour, their release generated little interest and they disbanded early in 1989.

Later in 1989 the Asia banner was raised once again when an invitation play a series of stadium dates with the Beach Boys brought Carl Palmer and John Wetton back into the Asia fold along with hired guns John Young and Alan Darby. Encouraged by the reception they received, Asia arranged another tour for the fall and convinced Geoff Downes to return.

In 1991, Carl Palmer released his much-anticipated two-disk anthology Do Ya Wanna Play, Carl. The collection showcased Palmer's greatest recordings with ELP, Asia, Atomic Rooster plus and several rare and never-before-released tracks from every professional group had ever been in. Highlights included cuts from sessions with British rock artist Mike Oldfield, and a live track featuring Carl with his childhood idol, drum jazz icon Buddy Rich and his Orchestra. Perhaps the biggest gem for fans was the inclusion of the piece fans had been asking for since the seventies. "Concerto for Percussion" made its debut fifteen years after it had been recorded.

In a 1991 interview he said, "The album has been in the works since 1976, when ELP took its hiatus to do solo projects. What came of it was the WORKS double LP, with one band side and three solo sides. It was then that I did the "Percussion Concerto." It didn't make it to Works, Vol. 1 or Works Vol. 2. I have always wanted to release it and now it has finally come out."

The current Carl Palmer Band lineup did a highly successful US tour in 2006 and continues to tour throughout the world. Details of the upcoming 2010 Spring/Summer tour will be coming soon!! In 2006, Carl also regrouped for the long awaited reunion of the original ASIA, with Steve Howe, Geoff Downes and John Wetton. The band has done four world tours and recorded a new studio album, PHOENIX, released on Frontiers and EMI Records. Says Palmer: "I have the best of both worlds now. I have an active schedule with The Carl Palmer Band, and I continue to tour and record with my friends in the original line up of ASIA. It is very satisfying and gratifying to know the fans are still out there and willing to support and enjoy the music I create. I hope to keep doing this for many more years to come."

Swayzak Soundsystem

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

For the first time in Cyprus Swayzak (David Brown Dj Set) celebrating klubd's first birthday since its reopening.

Brown and Taylor formed back in 1993 and in those post-iron curtain times took much inspiration from the dark and cold eastern block. The Swayzak name came later as much inspired by Eastern Europe as it was Hollywood . . . this is indicative of the juxtaposition of Swayzak.

Before Googling and the Myspace Generation, information was spread by mouth and paper, reputations built on musical prowess and friendships. Swayzak used the technology of the times; fax, pagers, photocopiers and answering machines to spread the word. But it was only in 1997 by releasing their first vinyl “bueno/fukumachi”(a record of deep dubby minimal house inspired as much by manga as a trip to Spain) to much hulabaloo of the few who had picked up on their sound. Luckily this was enough to inspire the young chaps to make more records on their self funded label. A call from a legend also had its part, Laurent Garnier’s“ beautiful and moody” answering machine comment gave them much confidence in their sound.

As things moved forward via strange twists they found themselves in 1998 releasing a debut album“Snowboarding in Argentina“ to much crtical acclaim. An album with one misguided aim to fund a snowboarding holiday! one that hasn’t quite been achieved though Argentina has been gigged several times. However it did put them on the road to bigger things, playing everywhere from Chile to Japan and quite a few place in between. Giant Festivals and minuscule clubs and bars, museums, fashion shows, Spanish cathedrals, and even a week long party in a Montreal loft. Regulars at Fabric in London and Watergate of Berlin: two of the world's finest clubs - Swayzak keep filling floors.

One of the first artists to be released on Richie Hawtin's Minus label with their Theorem collaborations and having released four albums on K7, the legendary compilations of Groovetechnology and Fabric 11 crossing the paths between minimalism, deep house, electro and pure pop. Swayzak have released and remixed for : K7, Minus, Pokerflat, Playhouse, Klang, Simple, Logisitc, Force Trax, Mille Plateaux and even Sony .Their songs have featured on several commercials, tv shows, and hundreds of compilations.

Their live shows are exactly that, never rehearsed and 100% improvised taking a journey like jazz did in the past. In these days of audio perfection Swayzak enjoy to be different, not quite playing the game as it should be played. Whilst embracing technology using unsynced laptops and outboard effects to create a dub inspired sound often much heavier than their studio works. They often play as a pair or with live vocals from collaborator Richard Davis and percussion from Francesco Brini..

2009 sees the re-release of Snowboarding in Argentina, Swayzak's oh so innocent seminal album inspired by the Berlin/Detroit/ Chicago/ New York music of the early 90’s. Originally released to critical acclaim in 1998 , this album originated in two forms ,one for the US market and one for the UK. However it was in Germany that Swayzak found themselves week after week, somehow stumbling upon a scene that was soon to be embraced by the world. Starting in june 2009 Swayzak will present their T bar London monthly night “Serieculture” an intentional unconventional residency.

Biedermann and the Arsonists

From: Saturday, November 14th, 2009
Until: Saturday, December 19th, 2009

A play by the Swiss playwright Max Frisch.

Plot Summary:

Biedermann is a fairly well-off man who believes that the arsonists who have recently attacked the city should be hanged. When a man who seems suspiciously like he might be an arsonist comes to Biedermann's house, he talks about throwing him out, but he never actually does. Instead, he allows his own guilt over having so much money to convince him to allow this man to stay in his attic. Later, he even allows the man's friend to stay in his attic, even though he catches the two loading barrels of gas into his attic. It's both funny and depressing to see how far Biedermann will go in order to ignore the evidence that his guests are arsonists and convince himself that he is a good person

Christos Christou

From: Monday, November 9th, 2009
Until: Monday, November 30th, 2009

Christos Christou was born in Pafos in 1950. After his studies in Paris (Ιcole Nationale Supιrieure des Beaux-arts), where he specialised in painting, frescoes and lithography, he settled there. His main work, which revolves around man and beings of the animal kingdom (horses, birds, bulls etc), is characterised by a dream-like surrealism that recalls early renaissance frescoes with sculptural forms.

Andreas Hadjithomas has the following to say about Christou’s work:

“The artist, through intuitive reasoning and a refined way of expression, makes up his own world based on idealism and a supernatural element that creates various associations and strong psychological situations

“Traditional, classical and Byzantine elements are clear in his work, without excluding elements of other historic places and cultural areas.

“Light, movement, shape, form linked with the artist’s thoughts create a lyrical and poetic world that touches the sensitive chords of the viewer, who shall be standing before the work for a long time in order to remember and admire the result. A magnetic force holds the glance to examine the parameters and details of the works that contain so much detailed work and rare mastery. Every piece of work has its own uniqueness, its own time and its own secret world. Everything operates with a result, but also with a reduction in its total. They all comprise the creator’s artistic vision, the personality of a man who, with consistency and completeness, transforms reality”.

Shootings on Mirrors

From: Friday, November 20th, 2009
Until: Friday, November 27th, 2009

Pictures and stories begin a dialogue between each other within the Pantheon Gallery. Memories, myth-making and false realities sketch out their idol in the mirror.

Three women artists meet for the first time in Cyprus and they attempt to examine queries revolving around the female sex. Recorded in the subconscious, the social rules and the culture of picture/ outlook directs its steps towards the mass in order continue its predetermined course. The main axis of report consists of both personal travels towards truth and regeneration of their identity. Each artist mobilises digital means in her own way, mirroring the daily routine and the outlines that she sketches out about women. Each artist adds her own optical corner as a factor in the exhibition with creations that are artistically of interest.

The artist, Nikoletta Karayiorgi, uses animation as a means of expression and investigates the repercussions that a woman can yield with her own beauty. The constant battle that society imposes on a woman, on many occasions, creates extreme repercussions. With an animated collage of photographs from the ancient symbol of beauty, Aphrodite, and the new models of beauty, the viewer can see the changes to the term of female beauty.

With a different approach, artist Aggela Chimona, through xperimental video, restores stories of the past. Childhood memories, human remembrance as well as the deterioration of identity are the main issues dealt with. Here, each narration is presented as real and not only genuine, representing it with the use of video, a medium that is often used to record “what is really happening” in the past, that can however be as unreliable as the memory. And so she examines different, potential truths that can offer different versions and new interpretations of the present and as a consequence the identity of the narrator.

On another hand, artist Chrysanthy Christoforou examines the end of reality with reference to artificial rebirth. The world of spectacle builds its own reality, where the regeneration of reality overcomes reality and looks perfect. The ideal is reflected through the fake images of happiness, messages and elements of comparison. The woman runs to serve the image of the ideal and it opposes in the cluck of the hen. The artist intervenes with spastic movements, bitter phrases, and ironic interventions while in no case does she differentiate herself from the world of the spectacle society.

Exhibition opens on on Friday 20th of November 2009 at 8.00pm

The Red Shoes

From: Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Until: Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Skala theater presents the play "The Red Shoes" based on the fairy tale of Hans Christian Andersen.

Plot Summary:
A peasant girl named Karen is adopted by a rich old lady after her mother's death. She grows up vain. She tricks her adoptive mother into buying her a pair of red shoes and repeatedly wears them to church, without paying attention to the service. Her adoptive mother becomes ill, but Karen deserts her, preferring to attend a party in her red shoes. Once she begins dancing, she can't stop. The shoes take over. She cannot control them and they are stuck to her feet. The shoes continue to dance, through fields and meadows, rain or shine, night and day. She can't even attend her adoptive mother's funeral. An angel appears to her, condemning her to dance even after she dies, as a warning to vain children everywhere. Karen finds an executioner and asks him to chop off her feet. He does so and gives her a pair of wooden feet and crutches. Thinking that she has suffered enough for the red shoes Karen decides to go to church in order for the people to see her, but the chopped-off feet with the red shoes dance before her, barring the way. The following Sunday she tries again, thinking of herself at least as good as the others in church, but again the dancing red shoes bar the way. Karen gets a job as a maid in the parsonage, but when Sunday comes she dares not go to church. Instead she sits alone at home and prays to God. Then, it is as though the church comes home to her and her heart becomes so filled with sunshine, peace, and joy that it bursts. Her soul flies on sunshine to heaven, and no one there asks her about the red shoes.

In 1982, Jean-François Dichamp, as a 12 year-old boy, made his first major appearance on TV screens playing the part of the young Mozart in Marcel Bluwal's epic film. Until then, he had been a musician rather than an actor. He began to study piano with his mother at an early age and continued studying at the Boulogne Conservatory with Geneviève Ibanez. After his successful experience on screen he chose the difficult route of a career in music at the Paris Conservatory, and the circuit of international piano competitions. A student of Jean-Claude Pennetier, Jean-François Dichamp was unanimously awarded his Premier Prix at the Conservatory in 1986. He became one of the most brilliant students of Nikita Magaloff, and later of Maria Curcio, with whom he studied for four years in London. A follower of Schnabel, Maria Curcio brought depth to his knowledge for the piano, and enlarged his musical horizon. He won three prizes at the Santander international piano competition (finalist prize, «young talent» award, and the Madame Arthur Rubinstein award for the best interpretation of Chopin). This signaled the start of a career which brought him acclaim in Spain as well as many other countries. He has appeared in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Ireland, England, the USA, Mexico, Turkey, Colombia, Paraguay and Chile. "A very sensitive artist" according to the Times, "a natural gift for Chopin" The Independent of Sunday; "The audience was completely enamoured, Dichamp was showered with applause and cries of bravo", El Diaro de Monterrey, while in France L'Humanité hailed "an exemplary maturity in this young musician". Jean-François has appeared as a pianist at France Musique and in various festivals, including the Chopin at Duzniky, Le Touquet, Arcachon, the Chorégies d'Orange, the "Midis musicaux du Châtelet" in Paris, Festa da Musica da Lisbonne, International Piano Festival of la Roque d'Anthéron and "Folles Journées de Nantes". Recently he recorded two CDs for the Lyrinx label, featuring works by Chopin and Liszt respectively and received excellent reviews such as "(...) brings to the ear an acute sense of magical harmony", Répertoire.

Fabien Gabel first attracted international attention in 2004 when he won the prestigious Donatella Flick conducting competition in London, giving him the opportunity to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra and become its assistant conductor for the 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 seasons. Subsequently, he has been invited to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra in regular concerts. February 2003 marked his conducting debut with the Orchestre National de France at the Presences Festival. Since then, the Orchestre National de France has invited him back regularly. A frequent guest conductor with leading orchestras, Fabien Gabel has conducted or is to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Barcelona, the Montreal Metropolitan Orchestra, the National Taiwan Orchestra, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra at the Musical Olympus Festival, the Orchestre Symphonique de Bienne, the Orchestra of the Teatro Reggio di Torino (Filarmonica 900'), the Prague Chamber Symphony, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse. A native of Paris, Fabien Gabel began studying trumpet at the age of six. He honed his skills on this instrument at the Musik Hochschule of Karlsruhe and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, the latter awarding him with a First Prize in trumpet in 1996. For many years he played in various Parisian orchestras under the direction of some of the great conductors of our time such as Pierre Boulez, Sir Colin Davis, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Simon Rattle, and Bernard Haitink. In 2002, Fabien Gabel pursued his interest in conducting at the Aspen Summer Music Festival where he studied with David Zinman. He has been mentored by Armin Jordan, and has had close collaborations with Bernard Haitink, Sir Colin Davis and Paavo Jarvi.

Sleuth

From: Saturday, October 31st, 2009
Until: Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

Sleuth is a 1970 play written by Anthony Shaffer. The play is set in the Wiltshire, England manor house of Andrew Wyke, an immensely successful mystery writer. His home reflects Wyke's obsession with the inventions and deceptions of fiction and his fascination with games and game-playing. He lures his wife's lover, Milo Tindle, to the house and convinces him to stage a robbery of her jewelry, a proposal that sets off a chain of events that leaves the audience trying to decipher where Wyke's imagination ends and reality begins.

Shaffer said the play was partially inspired by one of his friends, composer Stephen Sondheim, whose intense interest in games-playing is mirrored by the character of Wyke.
