The presentation of the “Joint Dictionary of Greek Cypriot & Turkish Cypriot Dialect”, written by Iakovos Hadjipieris and Orhan Kabatas, will take place at Technopolis 20 on Friday, February 12, at 19:30.

During the presentation, a ten minute film by Michael Lambrianides will be screened. A humorous description of the process of writing and publishing the Joint Dictionary of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot Dialect. An open discussion will follow.

This dictionary presents 3425 mutual words between the g/c and t/c dialect. 1840 words appear from the Turkish to the Greek Cypriot dialect and 840 words from the Greek to the Turkish Cypriot dialect. Additionally, 510 Turkish words are also used in Common Modern Greek, while 355 words have entered the dialect from other languages.

The various linguistic borrowings, gathered in the dictionary, show not only the rich vocabulary, but also the ability of language to overcome any differences between the two communities and to become one of the strongest foundations for achieving peace in Cyprus. Also, the product of this research confirms the common finding of all civilized people, that language is the most important - cohesive bond between people who may be have different religious or ethnic differences.

The dictionary has already attracted the scientific community’s interest in Cyprus’ (University of Cyprus, Open University of Cyprus) and Greece’s public universities (University of Patras).

FrEE RIDE: Positive(in)Life+ 5th June in Nicosia

An open discussion with Logan Bellew

How is it really to be positively creative, to think positive, to lead a positive life? How does a moment feel like, when you first find out you are HIV positive? How do you deal with it and come to realise it? How is your life different when you become positive?

The photographer Logan Bellew is introducing in a very special and personal FrEE RIDE this time, entitled “Positive(in)Life+”. Logan is a photographer, an activist and an HIV positive man. He lives and works in the US and has a special connection to Cyprus. We invited him to initiate a discussion at FrEE RIDE, and talk about his love for photography, his personal moments connected to HIV, his first reactions, his activities and who he is today.

Logan Bellew
Logan Bellew was born in Mesa, Arizona (1988) and resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He received a Bachelors of Fine Arts in photography, a Bachelors of Arts in art history from Arizona State University and is currently pursuing his Masters of Fine Arts in photography at the University of New Mexico. Logan's work has been included in exhibitions at the Princeton University Art Museum, University of New Mexico Art Museum, Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum, Photographic Center Northwest, the Tamarind Institute, the Scottsdale Public Art program, as well as galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Phoenix, Arizona, and Negev, Israel. Logan is currently an Instructor of Record in photography at the University of New Mexico. He has worked on photo archiving, curatorial, and catalog publication projects with the Princeton University archeological excavations in Polis Chrysochous, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and the University of New Mexico Art Museum. His photographic work currently brings him to Cyprus where he works with LGBTQ and HIV advocacy organizations. His work at present addresses the acts of hiding, revealing, and notions of connection within the LGBTQ community of Cyprus.

Rialto presents: Another Face. 6th May in Limassol

The Embassy of Israel in Cyprus and Rialto present the Tmuna Ensemble (Tel Aviv) in an adaptation of Agnon’s short story which follows Tony and Michael Hartmann’s journey of separation, through which they re-discover each other and revisit the misalignment of their relationship. The play starts as they come out of the Rabbinical Court after their divorce and ends that same night in a small motel which they find whilst looking for a place to sleep. What started as separation turns out to be a journey towards a new understanding of each other. The play exposes the couple’s emotional journey and reveals new layers in their relationship.

A few words about the artists:

Dr Zsuzsanna Császár
Dr Zsuzsanna Császár completed her piano studies at the Franz Liszt College of Music at the Conservatory of Szeged (now: Faculty of Music of the University of Szeged) where she has worked with professors Ilona Lucz and Ferenc Kerek. After receiving her Teaching and Artist degree she enrolled for postgraduate studies at the Würzburg Music College in Germany where she studied for two years. During the years 2004–2007 she had been a doctoral student at the Ferenc Liszt University of Music in Budapest where her supervisors included pianist Márta Gulyás and musicolo-gist Katalin Komlós. In 2008 she was awarded the title Doctor of Liberal Arts.

Dr Császár has participated in numerous International and National competitions winning various prizes such as the second prize at the National Bartók Béla National College Competition. Zsuzsanna was also a finalist at the Gail-larde International Piano Competition (France).

During her studies she was awarded twice the Hungarian Republic Scholarship and the Bavarian State Provin-cial Arts Scholarship. Further, in 2006, she received the City of Szeged Arts Fellowship and in 2011 the Artisjus Prize.

Dr Császár often gives solo and chamber music recitals as well as master-classes throughout Hungary as well as abroad. She is currently a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Music of the University of Szeged.

Dr Nicolas Costantinou
Dr. Costantinou is renowned for impressing his audience with his daring selection of repertoire, old and new, and his ability to perform with extraordinary instrumental ensembles. He has been hailed by critics as '...an artist of deep emo-tions, who is capable of performing music with his whole being and soul...' whilst his interpretations have been de-scribed as 'colossal' and 'dramatic'.

Dr. Costantinou has given numerous concerts all over Europe and the USA and regularly appears in prestigi-ous halls such as Wigmore Hall, the Brahms Saal of the Musikverein in Vienna, the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, and the grand Hall of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He is regularly invited to perform at international festi-vals around Europe such as the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, the Oulunsalo Soi Music Festival (Finland), the Gödöllő Chamber Music Festival (Hungary), the Ledra Music Soloists International Chamber Music Festival and the Kypria Festival (Cyprus). His debut in London's prestigious Wigmore Hall was received with favourable reviews. He has performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St. Petersburg, the Budapest Con-cert Orchestra, the Failoni Chamber Orchestra, and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, with maestros such as Konrad von Abel, Juri Gilbo and Esa Heikkilä.

Dr Costantinou graduated from the Ferenc Liszt College of Music in Szeged, the Ferenc Liszt University of Music in Budapest summa cum laude and holds a Master of Music in Performance from the U.S. Cleveland Institute of Music. In 2012, he was awarded a doctorate of philosophy (PhD) from London's Royal College of Music under the supervision of Prof. Paul Banks, Dr. Julian Jacobson and Dr. Jane Roper. His thesis is entitled The Chamber Music of Ernő Dohnányi; Tradition, Innovation and 'Hungarianness'. He has also studied with Márta Gulyás, Dr. Daniel Shapiro, Sándor Falvai and Ferenc Kerek and he has participated in master-classes held by acknowledged pianists such as Dmitri Bashkirov, Nicolas Economou, Vadim Suchanov and Ferenc Rádos. Dr Costantinou is currently a Lecturer at the University of Nicosia and also teaches at the Nicosia Music Lyceum.

The well known Greek singer Pantelis Thalassinos returns to Cyprus this March for live performances.

Pantelis Thalassinos began performing in 1977. He co-founded the Lathrepivates group in 1986. Following its dissolution in 1991, he returned to his native Chios, where he founded the Myrovolos live stage. He returned to Athens and live performances in 1994.

Pantelis Thalassinos has released 15 personal albums and has participated in more than 100, as a composer or guest singer. He is also the creator of many music pieces for theatrical plays, films, TV commercials and TV shows.

Part of the 18th International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama - Parallel Event for the "Costas Montis Year"

The 18 th International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama honors the memory of the Cypriot poet Costas Montis and presents as a parallel event, in the context of the “Costas Montis Year” celebrations, Aristophanes’ famous antiwar comedy Lysistrata, translated into Cypriot dialect by Cyprus’ most prominent contemporary poet. The production is presented by THEPAK (Theatrical Workshop of the University of Cyprus) and is directed by Michalis Pieris at the Archontiko of Axiothea.

The entrance for this event will be free

All foreign language performances of the festival will be surtitled in English and Greek. All Greek performances will have English surtitles

The Russian State Kremlin Ballet , one of the most famous classical ballet companies of the world, is coming to Cyprus with a 60 member group, to present a new ballet work, “Figaro”. This ballet is based on music of Rossini and Motzart and has been choreographed by the Artistic Director of the Company, Andrei Petrov.

“Figaro” has never been performed anywhere else in the world except in Russia and this performance in Cyprus is a world premier outside Russia of the ballet. The ballet has received outstanding reviews not only for its libretto and choreography but also for the stage presentation, costumes and music adaptation.

Stars at Kourion, 7th of June 2014

Biomagnetic Cyprus Ltd will host the charity classical music gala concert “Stars at Kourion”. All net proceeds will be donated to the Cyprus Anticancer Society for the purchase of home health-care equipment such as beds and oxygen bottles. The concert will be under the auspices of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Cyprus and will be organized by Clover Advice Ltd.

The repertoire will include famous pieces from the operas: “Carmen”, “Rigoletto”, “Don Giovanni”, “La Traviata” and “Magbeth” and from the musicals: “Les Miserables”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “The Phantom of the Opera”, “West Side Story” and “My Fair Lady”.

The distinguished team of international soloists consists of: Margarita Elia from Cyprus, Alma Samimi from Iran, Vaclav Cikanek from the Czech Republic, and Bo Shi from China. The soloists will accompany an orchestra of ten musicians (7 strings, piano, flute and clarinet), all members of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. The conductor will be Valentina Shuklina from Ukraine.

The concert starts at 20:30. Doors open at 19:30. The cocktail starts at 22:00 and will last until midnight.
