Memories from Assisi. Exhibition 19th May-2nd June in Nicosia

The Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR) presents an exhibition of works of art by Konstantinos Zannetos entitled “Memories from Assisi”.

Through an artistic narrative with mystical tendencies and nostalgic moods, Konstantinos Zannetos delves into his personal recognisable and idiosyncratic study of the figure in space and time. The allegorical characters chosen this time by the artist permeate the enigmatic medieval period. Zannetos’ works break into a spontaneous slow motion as they converse with medieval manuscripts. The exhibition challenges the viewer with sincere emotions, while the figurative and thematic aspects of the artworks impregnate the atmosphere with contemplativeness and often sensuality. Darkness turns into light, creating thus an enigma of impressions.

The exhibition will be inaugurated by Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis on 19th of May at 19:30

Inside, Outside & In Between the Buffer Zone. Exhibithion 24th April - 13th May

6x6 Centre for Photography proudly presents this photography exhibition by Barbara Laborde, in collaboration with Alliance Française de Limassol.

180km-long and 7-km-wide, barely 4m of space in some places: the buffer zone has different faces; it is sometimes a mountain, a single lane, a succession of lands, villages or ruins. You follow it for a while and then you lose track of it. You face it or simply guess its presence behind military watchtowers. You are stopped by its barbed wire or you enter it without noticing. Depending on who and from where one looks at it, the buffer zone repels, fascinates, disturbs, intimidates or is totally ignored. It remains an itchy scar, no longer bloody, but still an open wound. So present. So elusive.

The line, as it is known, is not really a line. Two ceasefire lines delimit the buffer zone, with a
different reality behind each of them and between them a territory where life continues. The UN troops are working there every day, Georgios and Osman cultivate their fields, Stelios visits the cemetery of his village, Elena opened a kindergarten while Mihalakis and his wife live there all year long! The buffer zone is 40-years-old, but only a few insiders really know it. And this for an obvious reason: without the permission and a serious UN escort, we are limited to get a glimpse of it and imagine it from outside.

Barbara Laborde is a French photojournalist based in Nicosia. She has been following the buffer zone for over a year, seeking to capture this territory and question its reality. The documentary work she presents, offers visitors a long journey within the buffer zone and along both its southern and northern sides, from west to east. A mosaic of stories and images, like so many opened windows on this hidden strip of territory, and some crucial 'keys' to better understand it.

Taxidi 2015 Exhibition, 24th-26th April in Nicosia

The TAXIDI exhibition is organized every year by the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents in cooperation with Display Art Plc. The exhibition constitutes the ideal forum where the Cypriot traveller can obtain valuable and comprehensive information on tourist destinations and travel packages.

Tour operators, airline companies, national and local tourist organizations, district offices from Cyprus and Greece, Cyprus and international hotels, foreign countries and other travel and holiday related parties participate with their own pavilions in the one and only Tourism Exhibition organized in the island of Cyprus.

The TAXIDI exhibition has been established as a very useful annual event which Cypriot travelers await with anticipation in order to explore their options not only for their summer holidays but also for their future trips. Participants provide visitors with information about available packages but also about specialized holiday trips abroad and equip them with printed material containing comprehensive information including the cost of the various options on offer.

The TAXIDI exhibition serves a reciprocal purpose. On the one hand, it provides information to the travel public on available packages as well as assistance in exploring their options. At the same time, the participants use the exhibition to learn about the public’s wishes and record travel trends in order to revise their packages accordingly and meet new needs and preferences.

Cypriots remain ardent fans of traveling and vacationing abroad. Available travel data indicate that this trend remains strong despite any dire circumstances.

Temples in the shape of the sky - 18th-26th April

1010Hall the Art House in Nicosia is hosting a unique photo exhibition by the well-known revolutionary photographer from Greece, Mr. Loukas Hapsis; 32 pieces of art of ancient Greek temples under a full starlit sky that has not been montaged or Photoshoped. This remarkable art collection consists of 14 ancient Greek monuments which took 14 months to complete; 1 month for each monument. Each piece of art hides over 200 pictures in order to experience ancient Greek temples like you have never seen them before. In addition to Mr. Hapsis’ work you will have the opportunity to see a documentary film named “Voice Of The Past”.

Opening on the 18th of April at 20:00-23:00, followed the exhibition will be open to the public until the 26th of April from 18:00 to 22:00.

The opening will be performed by the Mayor of Nicosia Mr. Constantinos Yiorkadjis and followed by opera performance and wine & cheese reception.

Unique, appreciated and remembered
Every year, hundreds of thousands of people all over the world visit Greece to see the ancient Greek monuments. A different way to experience the beauty of Greece is through the captured magical images of the well-known Greek Photographer Loukas Hapsis. His art expresses the visual appeal of each monument with the unique background of the Greek starlit sky that not even the naked eye can conceive.

Loukas Hapsis has used unique techniques with a common device, the camera, to capture scenery with backgrounds that has never been seen before. His pictures have no filters or montage and hence they look as if they came out from a fantasy. Each picture consisted of a burst of 200 photos in order to capture the movement of the stars. A photo was taken every 30 seconds, with the use of either a small lens or a wireless flash. By leaving the shutter of the camera open he managed to light up every detail we see in his work. All this work was done in pure darkness.

The Greek photographer with 20 years of experience in astrophotography and landscape photography has used both techniques and has created the exclusivity that can be seen in his artwork. His work was viewed at exhibitions in Greece and is being viewed through websites and magazines all over Europe.

14 months, one month for each monument, that is how long it took for his collection to be completed. For every piece of art the trick was starting at a new phase of the moon to take advantage of the darkness. Even though Loukas Hapsis would camp out of each monument for a few days and each picture would need almost 5 hours to be completed the most difficult part for him was to gain overnight access to the monument as well as total darkness from all the lights shining on the monuments. Due to Loukas unusual dream and free mind we have the privilege to view ancient Greek monuments like we will never see them before.
